Either get a new game with the new firemware, download via psp network update, or download it manually from the official psp website and then transfer it to a folder you have to make called UPDATE in your psp dir and run it. But i wouldnt upgrade if i were you.

You cant play emulators or homebrew, such as snes and n64 games on your psp. But hey if you dont care for them go for your life, but what the updates add isnt worth not having those features to me.

I just choose network update from the settings menu. Easy if your PSP is hooked to wireless internet.
