Default Steering Wheel Diameter and Thickness

Hi all,

Is it my imagination, or is the S1 steering wheel smaller in diameter and thickness than the S2?

Heck, I have both, I'll go and measure now!

*GK heads out into the cold Melbourne Sunday arvo with trusty tape measure*

Ok, the results are in:

S1 15 inches across, 9.5cm thick
S2 15 inches across, 10cm thick

Well that explains the difference in feel alright, personally I prefer the thinner wheel. My hands are smallish though, what about others?

well being that i only have a s1 and have never driven a s2, the thinner one for now, its quite comfortable in my opinion. then again that could be because ive never driven a s2, although i would like to get my hands on a leather wheel and auto shifter..

I have an XR wheel in my AUII which is a little fatter, not much though.. It feels alright to use. I have on its way a grey/black momo wheel to replace the XR wheel though. It should be nice, i like the thicker wheels. The BA sports steering wheel option is a nice steering wheel too, its very fat and has contoured lines for your hands.

The AU/EF wheels on ebay from rat global are similar tio the BA sports wheel, and very, very comfortable - much better than the momo, IMO.

Glenn - where'd you get a grey one from. I just saw one on ebay for $385 Buy Now (starting at $295). Haven't seen one for ages, and they are now almost double the price of the other colour momo ones.

I got the last grey/black one from a guy up here. I was asked not to post a price so i can't say mate. :monkes:
I fitted one of the BA GT style ones to my mates EF. I like the look of it except for the silver plastic inserts and the logo on the bottom... The momo one looks more factory and it matches my shifter. Very good lookin wheel.

does anyone know the deal on a non-factory wheel in regards to insurance? is it counted as a modification, and if so, would fitting the factory momo one be better for insurance? has anyone had an issues in regards to this?

I believe they do consider this to be a modification, no diff to fitting aftermarket rims. The factory Momo shouldn't be an issue as they're a factory option.

Ring your insurance company to find out; but if they have an issue with this, they are joking. It still takes the same airbag, the metal frame of the wheel is the same, just the covering is different.

the only reason you would have a problem is if you got a steering wheel that didnt have an air bag, eg most aftermarket ones, as this is a safety feature and if removed the car would be unroadworthy. the 'genuine' (well i guess they are..) ford ones would be ok, if the insurance company doesnt like it, then find one that does i guess...

i quite like the BA GT style one.

what you could do, is get a small ford logo, and remover the brand logo down the bottom and put a Ford one there.

it'd still look funny though because theres a ford logo 15cm or so above it. I wish they just made that wheel in plain black leather, no logo, and no plastic inserts. Then it'd sell like hotcakes!

do BA wheels fit AU's? i thought the center was different, and stereo/cruise buttons were different.

No, the actual BA wheels don't fit the AUs. The wheel pictured above is for an AU but styled similar to a BA one.

Actually, the BA do physically fit the AUs (same square shaft/spline etc), but the airbags, horn & cruise controls are not compatible

on the other hand if someone could get it hooked up to make it legal that would be something different.....strange the amount of things people come up with to make an au like a ba...the front transfers etc...what will we see next and au exterior with a ba interior? what would that be called then?
