Picked up the new Zetec today, very nice in black, kinda classy.
A much better drive than the AU Ghia. What's with the tyre noise tho? Anyone changed tyres yet? Did this help? Need more grunt already too.... |

tyre noise can be forgotten without changing tyres, i suggest loud music and a larger exhaust, the standard tyres grip well i wouldn't suggest changing them until you have to

You can also try some sound deadener around the rear wheel arches and under the boot carpet, as well as under the rear seats. I find a lot of the road noise coming from the floor of the hatch.

Het thanks guys, I will have a rear passenger listen around to see if the noise can be hidden easy...
Other than that small issue I'm very happy with the car, looks ok, goes ok, even smells ok... for the moment AND it uses exactly HALF the fuel as the AU Faimont. |

Louder music, definately, that covers up the slight rattle on the rear passenger door trim too...
Can't imagine the road noise on the 20s, Zetec20... |

lol the road noise is much less of a hassle then the ride quality, oh and as for tyres... i've just order 2 new falkens... $730.....

Tyre related road noise is officially caused by an agressive/bulky tread pattern and the air trying to escape and not making it out in time. Quieters tyres are both smaller/narrower and usually less aggressive in design. Heaps of things affexct it, but that's most of it.
Where tyre noise goes further is when the rest of the car also conducts/resonates the noise, something the Mazda 3 and Focus have been noted by Wheels mag as doing, the Focus less so than the 3. Must be something in the design, no idea what. I highly doubt it's the tyre choice, since they were also standard on the LR Focus and a very pleasant tyre to drive on. The LS would be affected both by its bigger rims/tyres and perhaps some other part of the structure. Either way, I don't think changing from the Eagle NCT5's will fix it, they're a decent quiet touring tyre. Not the grippiest thing, but perfectly adequate enough and great in the wet from memory.
