Default riddle

i dont know the answer yet, so any ideas are good

One man has six of them, two men have 8.
If women have them, they are halved.
If children use them, they have 18.
I have none, but you have several.

There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?

Goodnight all, have fun!!!!!!

Muwahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Does that have anything to do with the answer to the first riddle, or is that a new one, cause I'm lost... :

so ive found the answer, and ive been quite disappointed by it.

the answer is syllable's. dont blame me, im just the messenger.

"One man has six of them"
six syllables
"Two men have 8"
four syllables, doubled -> '8'
"If women have them, they are halved."
men is one syllable, woMEN splits the syllable in half (creating two
syllables)
"If children use them, they have 18."
nine syllables ('18' / 2)
"I have none, but you have several."
The riddle is given to you; I have no syllables and you have 'several.'
"They are red at day and black at night."
Words are read (phonetically red) at day and unreadable (black) at night.

pretty crap innit

Cant understand how it doesnt work?? i have to read over it a few times before it made sense. I knew it was something in the wording of the riddle and not a physical object but couldnt put my finger on it

"One man" has 2, not 6.
"two men" have 2...

Maybe it's just the way it was written out that was missing something, but thats the way it reads to me.

Perhaps it means engine cylinders...

One man has six of them, two men have 8. - A guy has I6, gay couples have V8s
If women have them, they are halved. - Women have 4 cyls. A woman has a 3 cyl charade.
If children use them, they have 18. - In their need for speed underground game... I hope
I have none, but you have several. - The writers a bike rider, and correct
They are red at day and black at night. - Combustion chambers get pretty hot..
