Sorry to get off topic, but can someone help?

Everytime I open IE 6, my home page has been hijacked by what reads on the address bar as "about:blank". It's some sort of search page and a window pops up saying "Spyware detected etc.. etc.. your private information is in danger". I have been gettung heaps of pop-up adds in the last couple of days when on IE.

I have tried Ad Aware Pro, Security Guard, Spyware Dr, Ad Aware SE Personal, Norton Anti-Virus and other free spy/pop up software but have not been succesful in getting rid of this. Can someone help please?

ps: I tried using the above program, but it's not for 98SE. :

i have to remove stuff like this from my parents computer alot

there was a thread on spyware a while ago, im copy/pasting what i wrote there:

a) go to "run" in your windows start menu, type "msconfig". on the window which appears go to the "startup" tab, and make sure everything on the list is unticked.
b) restart computer
d) download ad-aware from lavasoftusa.com
e) make sure when you scan with it that it's set to "full system scan"

then when it's finished scanning tick everyone on the list it finds and select continue so it deletes them. to be safe restart your computer and then scan it again.

f) use mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer, you wont believe how much safer it is!

follow this and it should go sweet, goodluck!

Did everything as described and when I opened IE again, it was still there. Damn thing doesn't want to leave the computer! Maybe have to call an exorcist?

AUGZMK - try a progam called cwshredder

http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract..._download.html

Gets rid of a lot of the browser hijackers.
Oh make sure you get this one

» Download the stand-alone version of CWShredder

http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

We've used everything the net has to offer - the only one so far that has blown everything out of the water is SPY SWEEPER.

You shouldn't untick everything in startup (msconfig) cos you'll end up not loading important stuff like your anti virus...

Also we used to use Zone Alarm for our firewall, Nortons for our antivirus, and Lavasoft's Ad Aware and Spybot for our anti spyware and adware.

None of them cut the mustard - we only now use spysweeper, AVG antivirus and Sygate for our firewall.

I shall try the one you suggested Laminge cos I do have one lot of spyware on my pc that just won't budge (cos I got more than one profile so it loads on both - you get it off one and it reloads in the other) called Bargain Buddy. Copped it off a website I went to while looking for a crack code... lol

Yep this new tool works good, we have been running it at work.

Although it doesnt pick everything up, its still probably good to run spybot or adaware along side it.

You can see that Microsoft is becoming scared of the open source movement, so they are trying to make people as dependant on Microsoft products as they can so it slows the movement down :

AUGZMK, if cwshredder doesnt work (it should), your only other alternative is to get a program called "hijackthis". This scans your computer for running processes. Save the scan to a txt file, and then post it up on a computer forum (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?b=1) thats the one I use. Wait till they tell you what to kill, then kill them (do not try to kill anything that you are unsure of)...

Figure that out all by yourself? They are not scared of open source, anything that is thrown at them can be assimilated, Microsoft - resistance is futile

Dont know if this means anything to anybody (or is it no-one cares?), but I found a funny thing with MS new anti-spyware beta.

It has a section where you can change the settings of your internet explorer in case of browser hi-jacking or anything like that. If you change the default search page for IE in this, no matter what you change it to, the program keeps changing it back to microsoft's search! The nerve of them! Good on ya Bill Gates, ya tosser.

He releases an antispyware program that actually is using utilising some spyware features, i.e hijacking your search page!!

Maybe its just hijacked your homepage so go in and check in Internet Options
Thats- Start,Control Panel,Internet Options, when there check the homepage address and if it isn't what you want retype it in and apply it and see how you go-can't hurt

Wish it was that simple.

After trying all sorts of software I have had no success in trying to rid this "about:blank" homepage (and the pop-ups). Tried everything I could, and I'm no computer expert either. Couple of programs got rid of it, only to re-appear the next time IE was opened. There are hidden files that cannot be found/deleted 'cause they keep changing their names all the time.

After searching the net, seems as though this was a problem over a year ago, and has come back stronger and almost impossible to rid of now. It attacks the FF 1.0 users too, not just IE 6. Thanks to everyone who tried to help, I've almost given up, after spending the last 6 hours in front of the computer trying to get rid of this shit. :

You need to download 'Hijack This' to remove entries created by the hijacker, DONT juct click willy nilly tho, only pick things you KNOW are not required/supposed to be there.

Then you'll have to go thru your registry and remove all entries created by the hijacker aswell.

Then cross your fingers and hope it works.

Yeah I downloaded Hijack This and used it. It's a bit beyond my understanding of how the computer works so wasn't game enough to change or delete anything. As said, I'm no computer expert and Hijack This is beyond my capabilities.
