Default EF or EL Fairmont Ghia?

Hi everyone as the title says I'm looking at getting an EF or EL Fairmont Ghia 6cyl or V8. I'm wondering what the differences between the EF and EL's? Also are the V8's any quicker as the 6cyls have the tickford engines in them dont they? Also are there any models to be avoided?

Thanks in advance, Mat

Go el, they are just that little bit more refined then the EF's, only in small things like front end geomtry, and if you get a series 2 EF or later you get the tickford engine and 3.45lsd.

Default 6 or 8

I went to Willowbank drags last night and my XR6 did 15.1 all night slowest being 15.176 and the quickest being 15.100 i had 6 runs. there was also a V8 fairmont which was running 15.9 and quickest i saw was 15.7. so it might not seem like much but when your next to it, it could be a car length.

15.1 to 15.9 is more like 5 carlengths.

EL Fairmont Ghia V8 in Regency or Heritage, no buts about it

Agreed for sure.

Are the V8s quicker? Not too sure, but my EL Ghia 5L did a 15.5 with just a single 2.5" Cat back exhaust. Most of the EL Ghia 6s I've seen run 15.9 with exhaust mods including extractors.

good on you mate, sometimes i think extractors dont give you any more power than the 2.5" Cat back exhaust.

In most cases, More power and better fuel economy. Id say they are worth it.

If your going to spend money on other go fast bits, you should be doing the extractors as well. They arent that expensive either.

: your joking aren't you? Have you looked at a stock manifold lately and compared it to a set of extractors...

Also how is having a bigger pipe diameter (cat back) flowing from a small pipe diameter (factory manifold) going to help anything much more than sound? As is reccomended on here, extractors in conjuction with an exhaust is one of the first mods done to a car, as it gets the best "seat of the pants" and dyno results.

before you all jump up and down and call cruizin eb an idiot...
consider the cheap sets of extractors that are out there.
i personally don't think the stock exhaust manifold is *THAT* bad.
while not optimal and not to the standards of the pacemaker/JMM extractors that have had plenty of research put into them, there are fairly crap sets out there that IMO would have very little gain, but thats the case with plenty of car parts.

John, you are correct. Given some of the examples of extractors out there the stock header is only slightly worse. I'll agree to that most certainly.

Maybe you should have written something like:

sometimes i think certain types of extractors dont give you any more power than the 2.5" Cat back exhaust.

I will just correct what CATman said, what he indicated only applies to 6 cylinder EFII/EL Fairmont Ghias. Basically, if you are going for a 6cyl, don't bother with EF series 1, they are just a Fairmont with leather seats, but EFII and EL Ghia's have XR6 motors, 3.45LSD, they gain the lower watts link point to stop rear steer as well.

I have an EFII Ghia myself, and I like it, its a good car... as for stock form, unless you are going EL update Ghia's, the Tickford 6 and the V8 are much of a muchness really, the 6 cylinder gets a better diff ratio which helps it off the line against the torque-ier V8.

he did say somtimes.
no need to explicidly say 'certain types' just to please everyone on these forums.
suggesting sometimes seems to say that there are times that extractors do help.. *shrugs*

EL Ghia V8s have 3.45s as well.
