Sloppy Shifter

G'day all. I have a problem where my 4spd auto gear selector has a lot of sideways movement. I pulled the cover up and tried to tighten a bolt underneath, but it already seemed tight. I hear there is a second bolt on the other side. May that be the problem, and if so, how do I get to it? Would I have to take my shifter off to fix it?

nah mate there should be 2 nylon bushes in there, they are white if iirc.. replace them

You might have to removal the centre console section to investigate. Possible that the shifter plate screw that tighten the shifter plate to the body of the car need replacing with rivets. Other wise put her up on the hoist and have a further look from underneath.

im pretty sure its a plastic bush thats worn out.
unsure if you can buy one or even if its servicable

yes it serviceable but for some reason i thought they were a pair.. I can picture the bush in my head, and you can still get them new from Ford..

Thanks for the feedback. I might have to investigate further. How do you take the shifter off, and after that how difficult is it to remove the centre console, keeping in mind that being a Ghia, it has all the power window switches attached?

remove t bar handle, remove tbar coverplate......unscrew and unplug power window switches... unscrew console (2 screws inside lid and 2 neer the shifter - you'll see em - there maybe another couple of screws.....cant remember)

thats pretty much it.... lift up and out

Should be a combination of about 2-4 screws on the centre console and then the entire thing should unclip from the dash. BE GENTLE.

The shifter, you will have to undo a clip from the bottom on the side of the gearbox and then unscrew the shifter plate from the inside of the car, should slide out.

All the electrics simply disconnect, usually each plug is different so you cant stuff up when assembling back together.

Please, double check all this, I am talkin from EF experience not EA's.

Thanks for the help again. Hopefully it isn't too big a job. I won't be able to give it a proper try until a couple of weeks when I go back home to Gippsland. All my tools are there and I also have plenty of space to move there unlike the carpark on residence. Cheers.

I got the exact same problem, good to know that it can be fixed... now what if you can't undo the t-bar handle? That's the problem I'm suffering.

its not really that easy
i tried doin it and it appeared i needed to get underneath it
i got the bolt of the hold the stick on but didn't have any angle or room to manouvre so i just put up with a wobbly stick

Yeah, maybe when I get my transmission serviced I can ask the mechanic about it. See if he has any suggestions

You replace them from under the car, take off the rubber boot and undo the 17mm nut on the pivot of the shifter, them slide the shaft out and replace the bushes.

You can have my old EB's shifter housing + Tbar if you want mate, I'll hand it over at the upcoming cruise (if I remember to bring it).

As Brent-EA Ghia stated, the nut is a 17mm one under the car (on the shifter arm), and the four bolts which anchor the EB housing to the trans tunnel are 8mm ones.

Cheers Dave. That'd be great. I'll be killing two birds with one stone. Getting a nice firm shifter and a nicer looking T-bar as well. Seeya then.

Also thanks for the info, Brent-EA Ghia. I've been putting up with the sloppiness for a few years but I've had enough of it. Recently I've been working on trying to get the car back into shape, fixing the minor issues that it's had so fixing the sloppiness is the next step.

no probs, it's all yours!

Just PM me or something a day or two prior to the cruise, so I'll remember to fish it out from the cellar & chuck it in the boot. The T-bar is in pretty good condition with minimal wear.

Dave, that is wrong on so many levels. I see you do have plenty of time on your hands! There's nothing wrong with Paint! Check what I did in Paint! The original picture I based it on was off the V8 supercar site. I did use photoshop to make the rims darker than original but the rest of the picture is all Paint.

I just had the urge to draw it on paint one day! On my 486DX laptop with 256 colour screen! It is a beautiful creation that came from within my skull. Which proves there's stuff in there
