Default IRS into E-series

Was chatting to the bloke at FTG Salvage today about IRS conversions.

Thought it may be of interest, he mentioned that someone came in and bought an IRS rear end from an AU and did a conversion into his ED.

Apparently everything bolted in, only needed a space cut in the bottom of the boot to access hard to reach places for the cradle mounts when welding.

Its not that hard, the AU used the same mounting points for the IRS and the live axle... which is very much the same deal as any E Series.

I can highly recommend it too. Yes its heavy but you can say goodbye to bump steer and the grip is superb!

its not a straight bolt up, there are some mods to be done.
but apparently it *can* be done.

no one that we know has done it.
benefit = au/ba wheels & better brake upgrade options.

Yess but it is a heavy rigid bit of kit, I'd dare say the EF/EL hollow kframe would be lighter...

The only thing close would be my friend who retro fitted an EB k frame into his AU ute.

He orginally raced an EB in offroad racing, he made his own suspension to suit (lengthened spindles, custom springs and shockers, big offroad tires etc) so when it came time that ford wanted him to upgrade to the AU instead of having to go and make everything again he simply just swapped it over. I've talked to him a fair bit about the conversion but not having any real knowledge about the 2 setup's it was hard to understand. He also beleived the steel k frame was a bit more durable. Looking at his photo's from the races I can say he would have wanted the strongest setup he could get! Quite a lot of his photo's involved the car being airborne and some of the stories he has told are quite amazing

AU k-frame should bolt up pretty easy. As far as I can tell, you need to lengthen two studs, that's it, it uses the same mounting points. Upper arms bolt up, might have to use AU shocks. I was going to do it to fit the AU engine and AU2 brakes, but obviously that plan is over.

So we need to engineer a turbo, but changing the complete suspension setup doesn't?

Seems like ALOT of stuffing around, surely a nice aftermarket kit (springs/shocks etc) could be done for much less than that and not be too far off.

Rough price for an EL GT brake conversion is $1200, and theres only so much shocks/springs can do to overcome different suspension designs/angles.

I'm seriously thinking about doing the AUII front conversion, I need to replace the K-frame, change radius rods, some bushes, sway bars etc, so its not a bad idea.

Does anyone have a few high-res pics from underneath an AUII? Do the PBR Cobra twin piston 330mm brakes bolt to the 298mm stock brake spindle, or are they different??

but the AUII set-up is better than anything you can bolt on for under $3000

Look in the technical section. Theres a detailed section on the AU suspension setup. Unsure is its AU1 or AU2.

Yup, the Premium Caliper bolts straight up to the stock AUII/III, given that you have the braket.

And the stock AUII/III brakes were 287mm by the way.
