Default vn motor in torana. worth it?

i was wondering how hard it is to drop a vn motor in a lj torana?
and round abouts how much it would cost?
and info would help.thanx.

Are you talking about the 3.8 V6 or the 304 V8? If you're talking V8.. not a bad idea. V6, don't waste your time. Sure, the V6 can go well, but dollar per dollar, the V8 will stomp it. Plus it'll fit easier in a Torrie, considering they had 253's and 308's stock in them, back in the day.

would it cost the same or round abouts? i was thinkin six. cos i only get on my p's in a week. i dont wont to loose them straight away. so 8 you think?

I believe there is a kit for the 3.8 conversion somewhere, no idea where tho. I've seen a few on the net with that conversion, also the same into an LH/LX. A 253 or 308 conversion would probably be a bit simpler tho.

Put an 8 in, go a 253 if your worried about your P's. Then later on a 308 swap will be a piece of cake.

I wouldnt bother with the VN V6 unless your after economy or a newer engine or something like that.

Most are about $350 and it fitting or not depends on the trans setup you have.

I just sold my quicksilver shifter for $100

theres a mob who advertise in car parts mag , that do Holden V6 conversions.
But waste of time IMO, go the V8.
I will stop talking about holdens ....................... now

When did the LJ have 253's and 308's fitted as stock?? Not back in the day!

The V6 would be a sweet engine change into an LJ, and has done before. Don't kid yourself about liscencing issues, you can loose your liscence driving an electric Toyota Pruis just as easy as driving a Ferrari 550. It is all about showing a little restraint, and mental ability.

Why put a heavy, ancient V8 boat anchor in a car which went pretty well with the old red motor 202 when a 3800 V6 will supply more than enough power and economy to boot.

For me it comes down to this. Want a sweet ride which will still be going around in ten years without spending a fortune on repair, fuel etc, go V6!

Nothing like a carby v8 tho. Have you considered just working the 202? It was a bit of a dud in the commodore, but the giant killing LJ Torana GTR XU-1 was powered by a good ol 202. How much are 202 bits nowadays? I reckon i could buy a whole motor for a slab of beer. :

Mate, wrong forum but seeing as so many others have replied;

No, LC-LJ's did not have V8's back in the day.

A V6 is a much better swap into these earlier Torana's

A worked red motor would make it fly anyway (I know as I had one as my first car, but that was about 25 years ago) and also be cheaper and easier to rego & insure.

These cars are now at least 30+ years old.

Just go buy an E-series Falcon (Classier, more modern, cheap, and heaps more grunt).

I used to own an LX Torrie with an all alloy 4.4L V8 from a P76 and it hammered and weighed a lot less than a V8 or a Big 6 but with the power of a 308. This would make an excellent motor for an LJ. You can legelly put a 253 in an LJ and all the bolt on chassis bits are available for an easy job. 308's won't go over the pits (in WA anyway). Holden made three LJ's with 253 V8's which 2 of which were dismantled and the third being unaccounted for.

Yeah, A Mates, Mates Cousins has it,along with the 6 XP 2Door convertable's what were lost, and a Secret Phase V what Ford put out wif all the good gear init.

These type of vehicle all start a ideas, which become Motorshow Concepts or enthusiast projects ( like the BA Two Door doing the rounds atm) and in thirty years become the car that "Holden made three" of these "which 2 of were dismantled and the third being unaccounted for."

The rest of your story makes perfect sense. The much unloved Leyland 4.4 was derived from the Rover 3.5 V8 and was a sweet engine, being mostly alloy. I purchased 1 from a Brissy CC Bus and fitted it to my Capri. Weighed the same as the 3100V6 and gave about twice the performance. Very Nice : :dj: :

My gf's brother in law has a torana with a VN V6 in it. Goes hard enough however the V6 is far from stock.

He bought it that way so I don't have any details on the conversion, needless to say, it's possible.

My friend dropped a stock VN 304 in an otherwise stock LJ & at his one run at the drags ran a flat 14 with a 100shot it did a flat 12 & that was skinny **** tyres & all & no experience
