Hi all,
The boss has given me a pretty tough brief, and I was wondering if you can throw some ideas at me. He wants a car that can: - Tow 3 or so tonnes - Uses Diesel - Has a massive rear tray - Is only a single cab (for more tray space) - Is not too old, as in after 2000 - And costs less than $15K I've already suggested a Landcruiser or Pajero utility, but they are a good 12 to 15 years old with 180,000km plus on them. I also jokingly suggested an F350 or similar. Any ideas what may fit the bill?

RA Rodeo trays are 2.8M long and it was the first small ute with a 3 tonne towing capacity.

Import a 2011 F350 super duty with turbo diesel option. Add another 0 on that budget, then tow the earth into a new orbit. Perpetual summer anyone?

It will be used to cart a bobcat on a trailer, with attachments. But it won't need to tow 3 tonnes all the time, just every once in a while. That's why the ute needs to be able to tow that, as well as have heavy loads of materials for the rest of the time, a real workhorse.
It will tow the bobcat to site and back, so it may need to tow it a couple of times a week, maybe more, but not full time.

with your preferred requirements
a smallish truck would be exactly what you are after BUT the smaller trucks (mitso canter,isuzu ect) are only 2 tonne on the back (4.495 t GVM on a car licence) but can pull more than 2 tonne of the rear towbar my 2 tonne 1993 mitso canter had a 3.2 mtr rear tray MOST 4x4 utes only have 2.4 mtr trays,and although they say they are capable of towing 3 tonne , for how long ??? your budget of 15k and 2000 onwards model, isnt goin to get you much in the "better"4x4 range |

Tell your boss not to be such a tight ***, if he wants all that he would be best of with an F-250, would crap all over anything else out there, but they are far more expensive!

They have put a new guy on, so they want to kill two birds with one stone. They want to be able to tow the bobcat to site and back, but also give this new guy a ute that can deliver rock, dirt, plants, anything.
So a truck is no good for the relatively little use it will get from moving the bobcat around. Hence my dilemma... Landcruiser utes are to exxy, Navara's are looking good. Sorry about the coin, but that's all I've got to work with, and that's why I've turned to you guys for help. Hence the 'impossible car'.

Most people have provided the obvious suggestions for the proposed budget - but the dollers provided will not get any where near what your boss want's IMO.
A Mitso Canto would be a good choice, a 4 door with small tray back but how about a diesel 2000 tray back Landrover Defender to throw in the mix. Good luck with the search. |

so your towing a bobcat with a ute !!!!!
are you serious F truck or small truck (mitso/isuzu ect) anything else youll break it in a week wouldnt even condemplate a navara,rather a patrol or cruiser but the $$$$$ you have are way of the mark |
