Default BA airbox fitting to AU

now its been dyno proven that my car would make much better top end with a better intake but at the moment i cant afford anything...
whilst my dad was at the wreckers picking up a fuel cap (i lost mine :togo: )
he picked up top top half of a BA airbox and all the intake piping
the piping is quite obviously larger and less restrictive than the au piping, also shorter as well as there is one big curve compared to the sharp bends of the au iping
the airbox opening is also 75mm i believe, or maybe it measured to be 80 i cant remember, either way roughly 3"

its probably not gonna give me a huge gain but for now its free and its something to work on so im going to fit it anyway
and if i stuff up i have a spare au airbox anyway!

the boxes mount up different so i am going to have to fix that up somehow, i might need to do a bit of chopping and get dad to do a bit of welding

has anyone else done this mod? i did a search and came across a thread but the pictures had long since expired and id love to see what others have done to make my job a bit easier

thanks guys

BA box into an AU will not give you any real gains at all - you'll gain top end but sacrifice bottom end.

Then the BA box should suit your needs well.

I'd answer, but I'm sure your mate's already told you, and I wouldn't want to contradict that.

would a fully exposed pod pull in much more hot air than a pod in an airbox? i dont know why my dad didnt grab the lower half of the airbox it looks like its gonna be quite difficult as the corners of the ba top half are rounded and the au box is square
also a pod style airbox, they are the aftermarket ones right? like the bluepower (i think.. maybe it was g & d) airbox? if thats the case... not really what im looking for, as i said im on the cheap side at the moment

No they are an enclosed Pod filter box. came on the BA GT/XR8. they have 2 openings , 1 behind the headlight and 1 for the factory snorkel. I got mine for $150 from the wreckers.

you were thinking about G&D's airboxes around $200ish mark might be wrong tho, not leaving the pod in the box and having it free gains alot more heat from the engine the plastic airbox reduces the heat going into the filter, hence why the only openings are one from the upper/lower intakes.
in saying that you can make a make shift one, using metal? i think as a heat shield someone did one not sure who but read it on a post a while back

cheers

I was planning on building an aluminium airbox of sorts that would fill the area from the wheel arch to the headlights and back again, my thinking being the aluminium is good at dissipating heat. Really only a cloud of ideas at the moment, but I reckon it'd work.

hmmm mont 5.0 i see what youve done, looks really tidy and is probably deals with the heat pretty well
$150 from a wreckers lol... even if i can find a wrecked gt or xr8 (like the parts would last long anyway)... i could still buy a brand new aftermarket box for a bit more than that

as for the people discussing metal, yeh aluminium is the lightest and would probably deal with the heat alright but not much better, thing is they can be heat proof coated anyway
i tried out a mates pod filter the other day, didnt feel a positive difference, left it in the airbox but i used some of his piping which has a slighly bigger exit from the airbox
car also sounded pretty week... didnt think it would make that much of a difference
thats not where the real restriction is anyway and as i said the piping was only slightly better (it was part of the jim mock intake kit btw)
