Default Qld holiday road toll double last year

The Qld Xmas road toll is over double last year, and it must be devastating to loved ones left behind.

The intelligent Bligh government forces are no doubt at work figuring out how many more "speed cameras" must be put in place to address this terrible statistic. And we all know this is the only solution ... don't we?

Sickening really.

Im not suprised with the way some of the deadshits drove over the holiday period... Last week i was driving between Tenterfield and Casino on the QLD / NSW border and I seen 2 near head on accidents, not to mention about 5 crossing double lines to cut blind corners etc because they couldnt keep their 4wd's on 4 wheels. After 700 kms we were shocked and scared at the amount of bad driving we seen.. Worse then that was the fact that most of the serial law breakers were the ones with the little kids in the back which even made us more angry!... Infact its probably the worse day ive ever had on the road and ive done about 200,000 km in the last 6 years.

Had a similar experience the other day on a day trip with the family, everyone seemed to be in such a hurry and the amount of tailgating and dangerous over taking was frightening... it puts you off traveling on holidays full stop.

maybe by the time these turkeys get their licence its too late to teach an old dog new tricks, perhaps more education and discipline at a younger age might help....or would it?

Yeah but what? Its an attitude problem, some people have an appalling lack of tolerance, patience or common sense...
Everyone knows tailgating, overtaking when its unsafe, excessive speeding etc is dangerous, some just don't care, im convinced there's very little anyone can do beyond fining people heavily and/or taking people's licenses and cars off them if they're caught.........
Its a reactive bandaid though.. it won't stop people.

There was a bad head on just up the street from my house yesterday arvo, some clown in a rented Nissan Patrol (they said he was a tourist from Europe) was driving completely on the wrong side of the road around a blind corner and hit an EF sedan driving up the road on his correct side head on at 60km/h. Both cars were an absolute mess. I saw 4 people get taken away in ambulances. I simply cannot understand peoples stupidity. If the tourist was oblivious to the fact he was driving on the wrong side of the road (and FFS the steering wheel is on the opposite side of the bloody car!) he should not be driving in this country.

I was almost in a head on today also, I was on my bike and this lady in a Mazda CX9, 3 kids in the back was driving in the middle of the road chatting on her mobile phone. Almost took me out.

I totally agree with everything that's been written by the way, they really need to lose the mindset that speeding is the cause of all accidents and start fining people for bad driving, and I dare say their revenue would be higher from such fines.
Anyway, thats the end of my ranting for now.......

I hear ya, but this is what I see every day around my area (inner north of Bris), lost track of the number of times I've nearly been head-onned by some d**khead cutting a blind corner to 'go faster'. :

While I didn't see the final figures, Vic was leading the fatality list most of the holidays. If rigorous speed enforcement via camera was the answer, you'd think that the state that allows virtually zero tolerance and only the 2nd highest population in Australia to be towards the bottom of the list, not the top!

I'm sure theor response to this next holiday break will be more speed cameras.

That theory would only be true if people abide by the enforcement....

Judging by the numbers still getting fined you could argue most still dont.
The problem is for every road fatality i bet 99 times out of 100 there's been a law broken...

But that's the entire point. Sticking speed cameras on the side of the road and having a 3kph threshold on the speed limit before you get booked isn't the answer as clearly evidenced by the statistics.

Unfortunately, GovCo rely on the revenue it generates and real solutions will cost money.

Actually they are too busy trying to get the Logies on the Gold Coast. Typical Qld Government they don't know if they are a PR office or a State.

maybe its time we voted in someone on a one track ticket on a "road safety" slogan eg like mr xenephon on his "no Pokies" slogan

maybe get all the forums to pool some money together and get someone elected as an independant. im sure when the guy says "speed camera's do not save lives but this does" other drivers will jump on the bandwagon

any takers?

Thought has crossed my mind, however it would be difficult to overcome the fact people are dying on our roads and the government and ACA like to draw that to our attention. Thus making a "no speed camera's" platform difficult to stand on.

And this gem of wisdom would be based on your extensive experience driving in all states of Australia over many years in varying conditions?

Or are you going to wait until you are off your P plates before travelling anywhere...........

Express and opinion and get a mouthful of abuse! Jesus.

And no I have not actually driven in all states. But I have been a passenger in most major cities besides Perth and Darwin. I have done trips from Adelaide to Cairns numerous times, both driving and passenger as well as the different routes.

And judging by what I have seen, QLD drivers seem to be far worse.

And whats with the P plate remark? Was that little gem of wisdom formed from your extensive experience?

not a no speed cameras platform, a platform to get all road laws/imaging/commercials overhauled. because this system is broken.

You mean 32 years of driving several million kilometres in every state of Australia?

I never doubted your experience mate.

But when you make effort to belittle someone because of their experience, it just goes to show what kind of person you are.

We all had to start somewhere. And in my 3 years of driving, I have racked up probably close to 100,000km or more. And from what I've seen there are idiots on roads everywhere. Based on my own experiences, I have found QLD drivers to be worse.

Respect others opinions mate and if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all.

Your profile says you are 19 so how have you been driving for 3 years?

You make a statement that you have admitted you so not have the personal experience (you have not driven in several states) to back up attacking other people (QLD drivers) and then get all upset when someone retorts asserting that your opinion may not have as much credibility as you think it does.

One would think that a person who proports

all we can do as sensible drivers is read the traffic around us and be ready to make whatever is necessary to avoid an accident that some turkey has set things up for.

driving home this morning from work (i'm going home at 0630am, and sorry, but tradies that are running late for work are not my problem) i had to put up with this BA falcon ute tailgating me all the way through Ewing road and putting half his car on the wrong side of the road so that I could see that he's in an hurry, yet, I'm doing 60Km/h... the speed limit in the area.

you can only do your best. the guy behind me was not a youngen either, which annoyed me just that little bit more, but i can only control what's ahead of me and i refuse to break the speed limit because some tool behind me thinks the posted limit is too slow.

but i digress, pathetic driving is found any given day of the week throughout the whole year.

we drove up from Cairns to Cooktown about 3 months ago. On the way from Cairns to Rockhampton we came across what is probably the most idiotic driving I have ever witnessed...

Bruce Highway, 1 lane each way. Some idiot in a late model Hyundai coming the opposite direction decides the B-double in front of him is going too slow. We watched this heap of *** get on our side of the road about 500m ahead of us. We were the 2nd car in line on our side of the road... As it turns out, Hyundai hero doesn't have the HP to overtake B-double quick enough...

And B-double doesn't care that a car trying to overtake him is about to have a head-on collision with 4 cars coming the other way because... well, i leave that open.

Story is, we ALL had to pull over OFF the road and stop to avoid smasing into the Hyundai that was still trying to overtake the b-double as it went past us.

my blood still boils as i remember that instance. and i don't just get peeved off at the Hyundai, but also at the truckie, i can only hope that this is not the reason why we see so many fatalities on the Bruce Hwy involving cars and trucks travelling on opposite ways.

I'm only 33, and I'm no angel, it took me a long time to realize that getting home safe is more important than getting home 30 seconds or 5 minutes earlier. Quite frankly, I don't think the government had an influence in this. It's just something you wake up to one day... and you feel sad for everybody else that hasn't realized that yet.

Went down to Vic for 2 weeks over xmas and they definately seem to drive slower around towns than up here. I don't know if it's the unmarked speed cameras everywhere. I'd hate to be a truck driver, the Newell Highway is a disgrace. Came across a bad head on just north of Parkes. The Newell is falling apart everywhere and they just seem to do cheap patch up jobs which don't last.........
