Hello,
Driving around the last few days the car developed a *loud* squeal. I tried to locate it in the engine bay, but it's hard to hear where it's coming from. I had a look at the fan belt condition and the inside wasn't too good so I replaced it, but didn't fix. I tried WD40'ing a few parts incase it was a bearing but it still didn't fix it. Eventually I gave the engine a short run with the fanbelt disconnected and the whine was still present. I desided to take the timing cover off to have a look at the timing belt, and it was in pretty ordinary condition with a cut on the side. The front edge looks like it has been rubbing on the timing cover, and the belt looks like it is about to come off the pullies. Perhaps it is the timing belt tentioner that is broken and it is pushing the belt out as well as it's bearings squealing? Does something along these lines sound plausable? I understand that the engine has to be aligned correctly, is it possible to be carefull taking the old belt off putting a new one in it's place? I will be getting someone who knows what they are doing to help me do this (hopefully). How much would I be looking at for a belt? Can the tensioner still be bought? I rang up a mechanic out of interest and he said to replace the belt would cost estimate $250 to $350, that seems a bit steep, which is why i'm looking to doing it myself. Suggestions/Opinions welcomed, James. |

Try bending the timing belt cover back a bit, they rub on the belt at the top.

All fixed now, It was the timing belt bearing (had siezed).
