Default Owned - speed camera

From:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/dri...222231857.html

September 7, 2006 - 8:45AM

His driving was too swift, but his thinking wasn't.

A 28-year-old man who blew up a speed camera, hoping to destroy evidence of his speeding, was sentenced to prison for four months today.

Craig Moore, 28, from Doncaster, said he had seen a flash of light from the camera, indicating that it had detected him speeding on August 14, 2005.

He claimed he feared his drivers licence would be suspended, making him unable to work to support his family.

So, he employed thermite, used in his work as a welder, to destroy the camera.

That backfired because images of his speeding survived the explosion, and so did images of him returning to attack the camera.

Moore earlier had pleaded guilty to a charge of damaging property.

"The defendant accepts that he has created a mountain out of a molehill by behaving stupidly. He finds himself in a great deal of trouble rather than the little deal of trouble he would have been in," said defence lawyer Andrew Bailey.

In fact, he would have been in no trouble.

Tameside Council confirmed that the Watchman camera was designed to deter speeders, not catch them, and that it flashed only as a warning.

However, the Watchman does contain cameras which monitor the area, and that's what caught Moore.

It only flashes to warn the speeder? Yet it had pictures of him speeding? I reckon he will still get the speeding fine.

Oh I have wanted to damage speed cameras so many times, but obviously thought it mightn't be the greatest idea.

Ive had thoughts about getting on my pushy with a bat, riding up behind the camera, POW, smack it and ride like hell into some small streets.

yeah...I hate them...but aslong as their are other people doing it thats the main thing.

Even though I haven't been done for ages, it still annoys me, lazy gits!

A warning speed camara? What the hell, if there going to go to the trouble of setting it up, and having the flash go off when you drive past, why not send the ticket? And yes, if it were really for deterence, why take a picture? Bizzare

Because it wasn't a police camera, it was a camera installed by the local council. They probably don't have the legal ability to issue speeding tickets.

Silly silly man.

People dont like cameras, but the way to beat them is not to destroy them. or atleast do it and get away with it.

But this might have been like the speed camera in Rosehill (Sydney). There's a camera watching the camera - just in case anyone kills the speed camera.

You would be swimming with the fishes too after cutting into 415 volt power source up the middle of the pole :
Explosives or some sort of death ray would definately be required :ticking:

Nearly all the cameras Ive seen have a camera watching them to stop vandals, only have to look at whats already happened to cameras in the U.K. and U.S. to see why. :gren:

Come to think of it.

You have to question the safety of a Camera flashing to warn people of Speeding but not actually serving as an inforcement camera. Ive seen alot of Cabbies who see the flash and freak, slam on the anchors and near kill themselves, passengers and other road users.

Local government really playing with fire.
