Hi there
I recently picked up a LW Focus Trend auto, done around 450km's. The engine and general drive is perfect however recently I've been noticing a rattle between gear changes. Not all the time, but mainly at low speeds when the engine is under load (like going up a hill on low throttle / low speed). There's also a clicking type of sound when reversing the car. Is this something common with that transmission or should I take it to the dealer? Thanks in advance |

The rattle between gear changes sounds like pinging. Are you running it on 91 octane? It will run better on 95 or 98.

Could be the clutch pack in the gearbox causing rattle, best have the dealer look at it.

I took it to the dealer and they basically said its a common 'fault' in the car. They had a printout ready titled 'operating characteristics of the powershift'; details different sounds and noises that the powershift makes, all with the point that its expected (Fiesta has the same issues).
Having said that, the sounds aren't as frequent now (driven roughly 2200km's). Still get the occasional rattle / vibration, but I find that the less you 'feather' the car, the less it happens. |

If the dealer is saying it's a "characteristic" of the car I'd be very concerned.

All is normal here, If you understand how they work. The noise is fairly normal. Drive it harder they love it. Just had a WT powershift for 3 weeks great car takes a little to get use to the feel but .... when you do its great and good on fuel

Forget the computer controlled clutch, give me one clutch and a manually operated pedal and gear lever with 6 forward gears.

HI, hope your noise is NORMAL.
I have similar experience BUT as the NOISE gets louder, I decide to let ford ppl to verify whether the noise is normal or not. TURN OUT it is not the normal noise LOL AND my car has now been in serviced for 1 week already and FORD dealership still waiting for some parts to arrive so they can install them and reprogram the car.... they told me that it would take a bit longer than 2 week = =... sorry not really a car kind of guy..very new to car...so I already tried my best to describe my situation to you : ) |

Well I thought the occasional gearbox rattles were 'characteristic' and the rough changes were based on it being a DCT.
Recently it had developed a grinding noise from 4th into 5th. Took it into Ford today and they advise that it needs a new gearbox. Dosn't really provide much confidence in the longevity of this DCT, considering the car is only 1 1/2 years old!!! Hopefully the new gearbox is better. |

Mines coming up to it's first service 15K, after the car warms up, approx 45mins worth of driving, the sound comes back... it's between the gear change of 2nd to 3rd gears... very annoying.. the more you drive...the warmer it gets... the louder it becomes. I'll be raising it with them , as they said that after around 1,500k's it should settle.. I spose it did but, after the car warms up, it's back.

I have a Diesel with DSG and it is fantastic, I would change the shift points a little but that is my only gripe. I get no noises at all so I don't understand what could be wrong, I do believe running the car on 95 until it is run-in to around 10,000kms though. Tight engines will ping, this will go away when you ease off the accelerator, if this is the case problem solved.

It coughed a little I didn't know the petrol version had a dry clutch, I gather it is a single plate as well. Yes the Diesel has a twin wet clutch pack system which is made by Getrag, it is better than the VW unit by far.
