Default Engine growling

Haven't seen my son's 2004 CL 1.8 for a while but when he visited I was surprised to hear a growling noise coming from the motor, like a low pitched siren in sync with the motor revs. Doesn't go away when clutch depressed.
Snarling probably best describes the sound and it's quite loud. All vital signs are ok and the car goes really great. Kms about 110k.
Any Ideas?

I would be looking at bearings in the alternator, water pump, power steering and if it has a timing belt, the tensioner pully. This is best done with a small plastic tube put on the bearing housing and listen at other end for grating sounds. If one bearing has gone it will be obviously louder than the others.

Thanks Marg, wasn't thinking about the ancillaries. Hope to see the car this weekend and I'll drop the "fan" belt off and see if it stops.
Stand by.
