Default O Ring replacement, dipstick

Now I have to do some running repiars on the XR8 while away in a little country town. Now the question I've got is do I have to drop the oil out of the car before replacing the o ring on the dip stick tube where it connects to the sump? Need to know before I leave the bigger town to head to the little town.

Not sure, but i have an idea that may help. Measure the dipstick from where it sits on the tube (ie the bottom of the top yellow part) to where the oil comes up to at the bottom of the dipstick. Now measure down the tube the dipstick goes in, and see how far down your stick measurement is. If it's above the part where the tube meets the sump, then you will need to drop the oil, but if it's further down into the sump, then I think you should be right without dropping the oil. Or just hold the dipstick outside the tube and see how far down it goes.

Can't comment on the XR8, but it should be the same. On the 6, I have not had to drain the oil to replace the dipstick o-ring. I've had to remove this part a few times when working on the inlet manifold, e.t.c.

Hopefully someone else can confirm but I'd say not as the oil level in the sump should be below the point where the bottom of the dipstick enters.

All sorted. I was beaten by the o ring and limited space and no tools while away. Mechanic sorted it.
