Hello All.
In process of getting the head of a friends 1991 6cyl EA checked and reco'ed, and noticed the chain guide on the passenger side of the engine is broken off. (This is the one which bolts to the head). I have had a few friends tell me the entire engine has to come out to properly change all the guides, including the one on the inside of the Timing Cover. Is this correct, and has anyone successfully changed all the guides without removing the engine from the car. Thanks. Greg |

To change both guides you only need to remove the pulley and front cover
You shouldn't need to change the swingarm damper and you can leave the plastic one there as the front cover holds it in place. P.S. welcome to the forums

engine doens't have to be removed
but timing gear change isnt fun. a lot of people break the top guide (the one that bolts to the head) and don't worry about it. its very easy to break but its upto you if u wanna risk it. i know i've seen a couple of cars running around with them broken,

yeah mines broken, i dont worry about it. i broke it when i changed the head gasket.
