Jim Stynes has just announced he has cancer. He will still remain as president of Melbourne Football Club, but will step down for the remainder of the year.

Not much else has been announced so far.

He is a top bloke. He has done heaps to help out others over the years, especially the troubled youth with his reach trek. I can say personally that this helped out someone close to me years ago. I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.

Last night on the Late News they first mentioned illness, but nothing was said.
I had a feeling it was something along the lines of cancer (I thought prostate most likely) because few other illnesses would cause a recently-elected President to stand down so soon.

He found a lump in his back a few weeks ago, which has turned out to be cancerous, which has also spread.

if theres something to hate in the world its cancer. Hope there will be more and more medical breakthroughs with that.

Even though I don't follow Melbourne, I can honestly say I hope things go well with him, with the current news.
I knew his wife Sam, from many years ago (She was a true blue Saints Fan).
She will give him the best support along with the 2 kids.
Being a founder of the Reach Foundation, he will have every support possible.

From the press conference, his condition is quite serious, with the cancer in his back having spread elsewhere.

Jim Stynes spoke to my class back when we were in Year 10 (2000), and he was a person very comfortable in his element, encouraging kids to set goals and aim for them, and that crisis breeds opportunity, as he experienced during his own VFL/AFL career. Some people tried to be funny (where the majority of us thought that those people were tools), while others interacted well with him, and he respected everybody's contribution.

Now, I cannot comment on him as a person, because really, I do not know him.

However (a big however), from the fact that he works with teenagers - some with some issues, and has bridged the gap between boardroom and supporter shows that he has not formed a delusional sense of grandeur, as we see so often with people who start small and build themselves into a position of prominence.
He is a person who is able to lower himself without shame if it means connecting with people and doing what he does best.

So am I sure that many of us at Ford Forums wish him a strong recovery and whether he returns to his role as Chairman at the Melbourne Football Club or not, that during his recovery, he is able to cherish his time with his wife and children, and during this, we should all realise that life should be treated as a gift, and not squandered on petty things (which I am sure many of us are guilty of at times).

What a shame, goes to show that no-one is safe from this terrible illness. As I recall, Jim held a longstanding record of most consecutive games - a fit & healthy guy of the highest order in his playing days.

Hope he beats it.

He still holds it...244 consecutive games. Adam Yze had about 240 in a row, but was dropped.

As somebody said today, it's 'ironic' because Jim doesn't drink or smoke.

My thoughts are with him and his family at this time, i have lost 1 family member from cancer and another has just recovered from Radiation therapy, so i no how bad this disease is and how much it affects a family, i hope he recovers asap!
