MPFI Fuel pumps in EA's-ED's how long they last?

After all the recent posts by people on fuel pumps dying, I am wondering how long do the EA-ED MPFI fuel pumps last for, Holden VN's last about 100,000k then they stuff up (based on common consensus), Ford ones seem to last way longer, but how long, I have 260,000k up on the clock basically (and assume original fuel pump), but how long till the pump dies when I least need it to happen, or how many k's have people got out of the MPFI fuel pumps so far, or before they died. CFI people feel free to post as well, but I am most interested in MPFI.

MIne is up to 299,650 ish I assume its the standard. Ive got a bigger walbro on standby though.

It's CFI, but my Dad's old EA was on it's second pump after 1,500,000kms...

I'd say that was the exception to the rule though :P

Ive probably done somewhere around 250,000 on mine. No problems yet.

Well my father had a EA 2 MPEFI Sedan and the pump packed it up at 80,000. But i think it was because was underused and unlubricated; the car only knocked up 70,000 in 8 years.

On the otherhand our EB's pump was still fine at 190,000 & my EL is still fine at 140,000.

Mine died around 200k km.

I had an interesting talk with the last guy who towed my car. He was saying that most new car manufacturers are using fuel pumps that are designed in such a way, that when the tank is below a 1/4 it needs to work a bit harder and heats up (because by 1/4 of a tank apparently it's not fully submerged in petrol or something). I'm not sure how true it is, but he was adament that this is the case.

I actually bought new fuel pump for mine yesterday. Unsure of how many k's the old one had done, but the original CFI one had done 210,000 and was original.
Funny you say that Luke, cause with the new pump, out of all the warnings that were in the instructions, the biggest one by far was to not let your fuel tank drop below 1/4. Weird. I generally top up on pay day anyways so it's not really a problem.

I have no bloody idea how old my fuel pump is, but it's interesting to hear that you shouldnt let the tank go down less than 1/4. I always wait till theirs almost nothing in her...

I've also heard the fuel pumps are more likely to go when the tank goes below 1/4 often. If you ask anyone who knows me, i ALWAYS fill my car up before it gets to 1/4. Some people (RMYERS) tease me coz of it! lol :P

This is true. Electronic pumps use the petrol to lubricate and cool them.

The fuel also surrounds the electronics in the pump, preventing air from getting to it and starting a fire. This is why you don't run a used fuel pump out of the tank.

Unless you like second degree burns and trips to the ER.

Strange idea using petrol to cool an electric pump....

The part that always intrigued me was how they immersed the pump in petrol to stop the electrics from catching fire! :O

I got quoted $220 retail from Ford. I paid $170 for a Goss one from Bursons. Slightly different pressure valve on the goss one, identical size and shape. Still with a 12 month warranty, same as Ford.
I have a feeling the Ford one would be made by Bosch, too.

I gotta agree with dave, after having 2 fuel pumps die on me in the past in old cars, I ALWAYS start looking for a servo when it gets near 1/4.

im not sure how long they last but I know a CFI one in a MPFI car will die in 5mins

Yup - I know that at least the E-series fuel pumps are made by Bosch. I'm not sure if we made the AU's and BA's.
Does anyone know the part number for the E-series pumps? When I get to work on monday I'll check out how much they cost with an Employee's discount ;)

can you get brand new senders? because the sender on my CFI pump never read properly, and the MPI one is almost worse (only goes to 3/4 when full)

My EA Fairmont Ghia's one lasted till over 400,000 it used to play up in hot weather and I killed it not long after 5 speed conversion and EF II motor installation.

Malaki: The eseries pumps have exposed power terminals in the tank. You only have to worry if they are close enough to spark.
