It is normal for them to get loud as they get over. A wrecker once quoted me over $100 for a decent ED clutch fan - I paid less than this for thermos. If you are keeping the car for any length of time I'd put in the effort for a thermo conversion.

There's nothing wrong with a good condition clutch fan and they can be had for pretty cheap. I paid $28 for a really quiet one from pinch-a-part ;)

If you can get a good one cheap you're laughing. I wouldn't know how to tell a good one from a bad one just from looking at one at Nick A Part™. Also, thermofans advantages of a slight power increase, fuel economy improvement and noise reduction remain.

There was a guy on the old forums selling kits, I don't know if he's still around. Basically you need relays, and a temp switch which turns the fans on when coolant reaches a certain temperature. The smart way is to wire it so that the fans are on my default, and turn off if temperature is low (thus if it fails the fans will run full time like a clutch fan).
