Default Congestion tax?

Got a call from a mate tonight saying that Gillard passed through a congestion tax on all motorists who llive near major city roads. Starting next financial year, it will be somewhere to the tune of an extra 5-600 bucks a year. It was on ABC tonight i was told. Apparently, if you have an electric car, you will be exempt. Did anyone watch it? I couldn't find anything in the news, and i'd like to know a bit more about it, as well as hear some views from fellow forum members and car enthusiasts.

First I've heard of such a scheme, and they can't just arbitrarily pass legislation like that without putting it through Parliament first.

I agree, cant see how the fed can pass a law on a state issue. Without reading it, it seems to indicate they want to encourage the states to implement it.

This would be the one in question

Edit: After reading it, its just a report.

Well i sure hope that they can't just do it. I find it a real concern with all this BS talk going on lately targeting cars and their owners. Did anyone watch the program this evening?

Well, thats me in a spot of bother.....I live beside the F3 and the Pacific Highway......double stuffed!
This is one of the merits of a company car- this will all get paid for BUT it is futile and frankly downright robbery if the accumulated funds are not put toward a better road infrastructure. More likely, they will be put towards toll roads at best or rail/bus networks. Worst still, the funds mat not be put to any such use at all!

Has to go through parliament first, doubt the opposition will support it and they have the numbers in the senate until July next year.
That's not to impugn the stupidity of the idea, especially given the fact we don't have any electric cars in this country.

Labor got nailed in the election. Do they really want to seal their fate at the next election.

Can't find anything about it on the web.

Electricity going up due to so called "infrastructure" I.E..the rest of paying for the ludicrous solar scheme, and now the Emu government plans to install a congestion tax. Fantastic! That's a good way to pay of Ruds plasma bonus and really pee of the populace at the same time.
Have these pencil pushing idiots no shame. Some people are doing it hard enough.
What next a levy because we run over the wild life in the country.

Coming to a government near you, the new "Ant Rehabilitation and Surgical Expenditure - **** tax" Yes, in the same vain as the ETS where they tax the air you breathe, the new **** tax is all about saving the environment. Basically, if you have ever killed an ant in your lifetime either deliberately or inadvertently, you have to pay.
Shortly after the **** tax is introduced, they have a new one to come. Its called the "Furry Animal Resuscitation and Treatment - FART tax". This is a tax you have to pay if you've ever eaten, run over or shot an animal. You have to pay again and again and again.

We can fight this, not on the beaches or in the air, join the three independents in the "Coalition Undoing Nasty Taxes", or "Brothers Against Stupid Taxes And Recalcitrant Dumb Schitheads".

Meanwhile, in a private 747 far far away, our political masters are plotting for new ways to tax you because our government motto is; "We've got what it takes to take what you've got".

Er i dunno why a few are jumping up and down, its a report.
There is no tax.
They are recommending that the states impliment a congestion tax in the future.
Lots of idiotic recommendations are made every day in stupid reports funded by tax payers.

These reports are made mostly by public servents/ interest groups, who when a government is changed, remain at their desk and "advise" the new government.

As can be seen in the ABC article there are plenty of other things recommended, including making cars 50% efficient by 2050.
