Hey Guys

Just wondering how many K's on the AU (I, II, III) XR8's is too much. I see plenty on the market with around with 180,000 too 250,000 k's. Just wondering whether those amount of K's are too many, or no problems at all. I guess when you start getting up around there, the old 4 speed auto's are nearing rebuild time?

Engine should be good if it's had coolant (and not just water) used in it and regular oil changes, and the cobwebs blown out every now and then. Auto trans are usually good for 250 to 350k, so if you get one with 180k on it, you have somewhere between 5 and 15 years to save for a new auto.

Do it Bucky - you know you want to! Even if it's just a weekend car.

Mine has 205k on it. Despite buying someone elses problem (because of neglect) Ive looked after it since purchase, and I believe ive saved mine from a fate worse than death. It now runs probably the best it has in years, a rebuilt auto is general requirement for these k's (mine was done at 185k), along with other long term maitenence items. I just recently saw an AU Fairlane V8 on ebay with over a million k's on it. So the wheezer can keep up with the I6 for reliabilty. Just like all AUs really, look after it and itll look after you for a very long time.

Just to add to this, though my engine has only done 85,000km, I believe my transmission is the stock one, so it has 165,000km on it. The service last week showed no signes of anything other than normal wear, and good fluid colour etc. So mine should be good at least until next auto trans service at 185,000km.

Thanks guys. Looking at a couple of options for a second car. Thinking about a Series 2 or 3 XR8, but not 100% sure which way I'll go.

How about a Series 3 TE50? - les than 200k on the clock and no auto to worry about.

As tempting as it would be, it must be an auto. And your price is far more than I'd be willing to spend.

What's the average klm's travelled a yr, about 10-15 thousand, so for around a 10 yr old vehicle so from 100 thou to 150ish.

I bought my XR8 3 years ago with around 180,000 on it, the car is a gem. So far (touch wood lol) it's been the best car I've ever owned. So highish K's don't really worry me that much anymore.

maybe if your a nanna who drives to church.. i do 30 clicks a year... i think the average is more around 20.

kilometers, to a certain extent, are just numbers on the dash. maintenence is ALOT more important than the numbers.

ive seen plenty of HORRIBLE vehicle examples with upto 200,000 kms less than another equivalent. people are far to strung up by the odometer. I could get my odo figure changed for 200 bucks... its not the be all and end all.

if i were you, id be happy buying an AU with ~200kms on it, so long as its been well maintained

Obviously you are above the average, to which I was not comenting about, this is from the Australian Bureau of Statistics,

Australian registered motor vehicles each travelled an average of 15,300 kilometres in the 12 months ended 31 October 2009. New South Wales (15,700 kilometres), Victoria (15,700 kilometres) and Queensland (15,400 kilometres) were above the national average, while vehicles registered in Tasmania travelled the least number of kilometres (13,800).

^^ thats a crock. 20-25k/year is the average. I wish ANY cars i ever owned only did those "Australian Bureau of Statistics" k's!

Well most car manufacturers have servicing schedules for 15k km a year. Some still have the 10k per 6 months so 20k a year. I'd be lucky to do 10k in a year.

That's only the average in terms of the mean. If you look at the median, it would be more like 20 to 30k per year.

I heard that it was bought from the wholesaler as soon as i let it go for a reasonably cheap price so the guy selling it is just after some qucik money IMO.
In the ad some details are incorrect aswell ie 200kw and cast iron heads

My AU2 XR8 sedan (manual) has 254k on the clock, it's going well considering! I bought it 12months ago with only a week rego on it for a good price.

I've owned it for 12months in that time ive done just over 10,000 k's, serviced it twice (it was due for one when i bought it,a nd i did one just last week), but will have to start servicing it at 6month intervals since i don't do many k's!

All i've had to do mechanically was replace the steering rack and tie rod ends, heater tap valve, a couple of bushes. I chose to do the Tickford premium brake upgrade (which whilst it was expensive was still worth it).

To pass rego next month i'm putting in

-A new radiator because of a small leak down the side, and whilst i'm at it i'm replacing both radiator hoses, the heater hoses, header tank, the associated header tank hoses, and adding a new radiator cap. I'll do a flush on the radiator before replacing it to clean out the engine's water jackets.

-It will also need front shocks as they are both leaking fluid (although driving it you wouldn't know they are shot), and finally my front sway bar "D" bushes are shot even though they are only 12months old its because they never got greased and they steering rack has never been re-tightened so that probably contributed! (I will be tempted to go for Koni's and full nolathane front end bushes but it isn't really necessary!)

So i think the k's don't matter too much as the things which have cost me money with my car have been things that can happen to any car, even one with lower mileage.

Go for it and buy a XR8! get the latest model one you can get, in the best condition you can find, for the money you have!

Bought the Ghia with 180k on it back in 2008, all I've had to replace for wear and tear was a front lower ball joint and a new radiator last year (overflow bottle is next on the list). Everything else has been great (then again all the brakes, suspension, gearbox and motor were only replaced because of performance, not because anything failed) and the car has 215k on it (motor + gearbox 15k less).

Go on you know you want to i got rid of my white ghia in 09 and went to a ba xt manual and regreted it and now ive got a windsor powered au and im loving everytime i drive it and it has 250+ kays and drives smoothly but there are a lot of very optimistic people out there for their asking prices look around and then make youre decision.

Thanks again to all for your replies. At this stage I am only considering another car and I'm not sure which way I'll go. If I go this route of an 8cyl ( never owned a v8 ford) it will be one of a few cars. I won't say much more as I am researching options and if my circumstances change, then a 2nd car could be on the cards. This is all to do with work opportunities. Will let you know once I know more, but thanks again for everyones input.

I also have a brand new set of genuine XR mats that should go into an AU.

. So I guess I should buy the car to put the mats into.)))

Why are you wanting a XR8? Daily, weekender?

If its a toy id be sooner spending $10k on a classic ford than a modern classic. Atleast when you fix something on the older ones you have more of a chance of getting your money back when it comes time to sell.

Good luck finding something decent for 10k.
