My daughter turns 4 on Anzac Day, and I'm going to the airport to pick up the mother-in-law who'll be staying with us for a couple of months (oh, joy).

At the risk of starting a bit of a debate here I sometimes wonder if a lot of people just use Anzac Day (and other events throughout the year) as an excuse to go the pub, thinly hidden behind the veil of 'patriotism'. Let's remember what the real reasoning behind it is - and it's not to go to the pub.

Dawn service at either Chatswood or Hornsby. Then marching in the city and some two-up at an RSL. Not sure which one just yet.

Truthfully, probably in bed.
I am grateful for the sacrifices made everyday in my enjoyed freedom. I plan to one day attend the dawn service at the memorial. Why not this year? a) I want to go with somebody b) I need to want to go rather than be dragged along You asked the question, and so it has been answered. No flames please.

I dont mind a drink myself, yes I do know what an RSL is and frequent one quite a bit actually, my point was that some people probably do go a bit far with how they 'celebrate' things like ANZAC day. Flame me, badmouth me I dont care - THAT is something I feel strongly about.

b2tf, I think you make a valid point. Some people just see it as a holiday. I think it was last year ANZAC Day fell on a Saturday and people were complaining about not getting a public holiday in lieu? I can't remember. I was at sea for ANZAC Day.

b2tf. i never suggested you pointed the finger or accused anybody on this forum. i do agree that there are others that use this day as an excuse. which is something that disappoints me.
ok my flame comment was probably uncalled for. i started this thread because i was interested in what other members were doing on this day not to start any sort of debate.

I want to teach my boys good values, so on Anzac day, I talk to them about what took place, we will observe a minutes silence for the fallen and then in the afternoon we have a bbq.
Those that fought for the country should not be forgotten...and it is our duty as parents to educate our kids on how this country came to be what it is! Who fought for it and what freedoms we now have. Why do we need a new war to show us what our past is? Men lost their lives and should not be forgotten for it! Anzac Day. Lest we Forget.

over the last 10 or so years ive seen ANZAC day degenerate into a free for all, it used to be all about respect, the younsters these days seem to enjoy drinking and fighting more than actually remembering the sacrifices the diggers made for us.
i go to the dawn service and then back home to hide from our scummy youth of today, and im only 31 lol

I will be working at Kings Park that morning (Im in Turf management for the botanical gardens) The park is desperatly trying to complete the construction work for the new Ceremonial Walk for Anzac day. The contractors have stuffed up a few times and had to relay roads, pathways, turf and so on so they are running it tight. looks a mess at the moment. Hope they finish it, but the problem is keeping 30,000 people of our new turf.
About time they removed Frazer Ave between the restourant and Sir John Forest round-a-bout.

It's amazing that the Turks allow us to celebrate our losses over there when we were the invaders, so what do alot of Kiwis and Aussies do? Go over there and get ****ed out of their minds and disrespect the entire day.

For me, I'll be attending the Dawn Service in Martin Place, Sydney. Then the RSL for breakfast, then participating in the March through Sydney CBD.
This will be my first ANZAC day back in Australia as a decorated Airman of the RAAF, and come rain, hail or shine, I'll be there to March next to my Brothers, the Veterans, and in remembrance of the Fallen. To me ANZAC day, is a day of partaking in the Australian pastimes, that were denied to our servicemen during times of conflict. It is to remember the sacrifice for which they paid the ultimate price. So if that means having a beer and BBQ or playing two-up all day and heading home broke, so be it. People can pay their respects however they like, they should never lose sight of what this day means to Australia and the Servicemen/Women who have served in pursuit of our Defence. |

reports of 40,000 strong turnout at Melbourne's shrine, rode in with a couple of mates for dawn service - only one thing ****ed me off, WTF is it with people standing shoulder to shoulder who feel the need to spark up then drop their butt on the memorial walk at the shrine...???
I'm a smoker, I managed to wait until the service was over then found a quiet place away from others to enjoy my cigarette... |
