Question 5 Speed AU Convesion Questions

Hi All,

I'm after all the gear to convert my AU2 SR sedan from auto to manual.

Where can I get it? How much is a good price? How much to install?

All answers are appreciated.

Cheers,

GK

George, I think we all know that you're going to do it yourself and write up a 100page installation manual!

Honestly I doubt I could do it! LOL! I'll get my mechanic and good mate Dave to do it, I'll be there, probably taking pics and helping where I can though! LOL!

I made this very comment to Evan on Sunday evening! LOL!

The tranny in the SR is needing work, otherwise I wouldn't be looking at the changeover.

Easiest car to find the parts off might be a ute. I say that as I hardly ever see AU sedans with T5's that have been written off.

You could talk to FTG, but you will need a pedal box (or maybe use a mal wood pin), th box, maybe an ECU (could look at editing yours, that might work or you might be abe to trick it like e series), trim parts, different tailshaft (?)...and I think thats about it.

Just been quoted $1,500 for a box that's done 140K and everything except the computer and loom. Too dear me thinks. I'll keep hunting.

My mate Dave is yet to get back to me, but I'd be shocked if he couldn't get me all the bits for under $1,500. Also Evan is doing some checking for me.

If anyone has some good leads in Melbourne, please let me know.

Cheers all,

GK

Question

Anyone got any good leads on where I can source these bits from?

Evan, have you contacted your buddy yet?

My concern is that I'll get a box with too many kays on it. Maybe I have to replace the auto and go a 2,500 stallie, matched with the single spinner 3.45 or other.1

Pondering, pondering! LOL!

You have no choice other to get a box with some k's, unless you want to buy new from Ford (if you can?).

Talk to FTG!

I have, but the one they're offering has 140K on it and can't supply all the bits (missing loom and computer), and still want 1.5K. That's a bit above the going rate from what others have paid for lower kayed equipment. But hey, I may have to take it, and get a flash box. I'd still need the loom though right?

As I've said above, I may have to redo the auto.

you can still use your auto ECU and just wire in the reverse lights

Does your car have cruise?

Thanks for the thoughts Blacky but I think the input shaft is also a mismatch for the I6. At least that's what Evan told me last weekend! LOL!

Your right GK i've heard the input shaft is different as well. The 6 cyl one is a little longer i think. Hence the reason the e series 5 speeds dont fit.

Strangely, I was in the middle of purchasing an AU with an EF/EL 5 speed in it. Unfortunately seller dropped off the face of the earth, so sale didn't go ahead and I don't have much details on the conversion. All he could really tell me that it was 100% an EF/EL T5 used, and it took him and 2 of his mates a day to do, and there was some minor mods involved.

I've tried a few leads and have turned up nothing. If my mate Dave doesn't dig up anything soon, I may just do the auto work I had originally planned.

Bah!

E series T5 don't fit because the AU T5 is physically longer. I just can't remember if the difference is the bellhousing or the rear extension housing.

Chucking a BA T5 in won't give you a 6 speed.

Any gearbox can be made to sit behind any engine - it's all just a matter of dollars.

Putting a 6 speed in an AU will not be a cheap exercise, its a hell of a lot of work too. NILE8R had one, read the SF article about how it was done, check your bank balance and then decide if you really want to do it.

A 6 speed in an AU i got quoted $9500 to convert my XR8 from auto to 6 speed, Red XR i think its the bellhousing that gives it the length because if ya put the E series box in the shifter is under the dash. I think thats right anyway.
