Smile Problem with AU

Hi all,
Last night while driving home i noticed my dash lights were really dim also i noticed that my ABS and airbag indicator lights had come on, all of a sudden my radio was turning on and off by itself. Afew minutes later all the gauges/ speed, fuel, temp stopped working and it also seemed like it was about to stall which it then did, tried starting the car again which it didn't. I managed to get a jump start and get home. Once a got home i put a multimeter on my battery to discover the voltage was 8.6v idle. This morning i tried starting the ford to no avail. My guess is its the alternator. Please any comments/replies greatly appreciated.

P.S love this forum so much information !!!

Barry,

I had mine replaced a couple of weeks ago and it cost $524.00, this however may not be indicative of normal pricing as the guys I took it too overcharge for everything but they were the only ones who could do it at very short notice..ie I rang at 0730 and it was all done by 1200....gr8 service inflated price....I have read that exchange ones for AU's are not worth getting and is better to get a brand spanker, there are a couple of threads on here and it was mentioned that the Mitsubishi brand alternator is the better one...hope it helps.

Hi all,
Update on the alternator situation, im getting it replaced with a new one. Price is $480, the reason for this madness is because of the power steering pump leaking on the alternator.

thanks to all for your comments

Barry.

Exactly same as mine...although it took 6 months after the leak ws fixed for the alternator to give up the ghost.

glad you got it sorted Barry. Seems like a common issue. I'll keep an eye on mine when the time comes. Im getting a little bit of weeping out of the PS pump at the back.

if i remember correctly- someone on here cleaned there alternator after giving it a power steering fluid bath. They seem to have rectified the problem- cheaper alternative than a 500 buck replacement.??

That was Ron West - an unexpected bonus, I'd say.
