Default The Dreaded EF of Doom!

As most will know.. my EF exploded over a month ago, with major engine work needing to be done in order to get it right again.
Well the time has come and yesterday it was fired up...

so far the following has been done.

  • New timing gear/Chain/guides
  • Reco'd head with cleaned ports
  • AU gasket kit
  • full set of AU head bolts
  • New balancer
  • New Timing Case (old was broken in 3 peices)
  • New water pump
  • New Starter Motor
  • Rocker Gear
  • Leads/Plugs
  • lots of oil & filters

so anyway, yesterday it started and was running VERY nicely.
perfect idle etc... but very loud.
aaaaaand there is no oil in the head

SO
basically... the oil pump appears to have been stuffed up somewhere along the line, and now the engine has to come out :( :( :(
after a month of fixing everything... and finally getting it started.. its so tempting to burn the POS!

but it will be fixed.... and will be like new :P
but damn... when something goes... it all goes with it!

But after those pictures of trauma you took wouldn't a new bottom end have been the safest bet from the start?

Bummer that it has to come out and have the sump dropped after all the work you put in

the bottom end is actually fine.
we did a compression test and the marks in the pistons arn't as bad as first suspected.
As said, the engine itself runs perfect, just no oil :o

the sump was flushes to try and get everything out, obviously the pump had already gone

The engine doesnt have to come out to replace the oil pump, but depending on what else needs to be done down there it might be easier.

You sure your driveway is not sitting on some sort of cursed ancient burial ground or something.

how else do u change the oil pump?
we were going to lift the engine enough to get the sump off then pull it out the front of the car.

Man, that sucks the big one! Reminds me of my first car, a TC cortina, rebuilt the motor and had a lumpy cam. The new oil line that fed the cam wasnt drilled out like it was supposed to be, resulting in a ceased cam & shreaded timing belt.

Good luck getting her running.

Lift the engine slightly with a crane - then drop the k-frame out the bottom.

Instructions here: http://titan.homelinux.com/~stockstandard/

I have done it before and I think it is easier than pulling the engine.

I'm in two minds here. Exploded as in 'exploded' BOOM fire etc. etc. or exploded as in a metaphor for something that went wrong...

Mod day at your place John? :p
It's always the way, but you just gotta remember that once it's done, it should all last for a fair while before any more work needs to be done.
Good luck with the oil pupm change, can you take a few pics of it while you are doing it? I gotta do mine in the not too distant future...

When I did it I followed the instructions and the k-frame dropped far enough to get the sump out (http://titan.homelinux.com/gallery/album06/IMG_2100). If you undo the shockers from the top of the tower it will drop a hell of a lot further.

LUkes was done by lifting the engine up...
dropping the kframe seems easier.
