Default Idle issue?

Have been having minor issue with my AUii hopefully someone can shed some light.

On start up (hot or cold) car will start fine and idle fine for 2secs and then the rpm drops to nearly 200 (almost sounds like it groaning! when it does it to, similar noise to a noisey power steering rack).

It doesnt stall, but pics up RPM pretty quickly. Even when moving from Park to Drive it will drop RPMs back down to 200 then then its fine.

Aircon is also switched off at the time so i dont think its to do with the idle load control when the aircon kicks in?

Doesnt do it all the time, but its pretty regular.

G,day Jim, sounds like the isc is working ok but could be still dirty, stickey plunger maybe. Fuel filter, coilpack? When its idling funny, turning you're steering wheel side to side will bump the idle up a bit indicating the isc is working (if not, power steering switch?). Its only at idle right? No problems above idle? Lost any power? A coilpack with out of spec primary resistance values will give a intermittent bad/rough idle-primary spec is 0.6ohm. To check coilpack, rip out a spark plug one at a time, rest it were it will get good earth on the rocker cover (can be dangerous so dont touch anything you shouldnt), get a assistant to start car and inspect quality of spark-better to do at night time. Fuel filter is pretty easy to change out (have little flat blade screw driver handy just in case, the fitting can be fiddly to get off with out the right tool). Hopefully its just something ive mentioned, have a look and see what you find. Other members will hopefully chime in with a fix. Good luck and let us know how you go.

cheers, Maka

Yea only happens at idle... and only once.. ie... when i start the car it will do it once within seconds of start up (starts idles at 800 for 2 seconds then groans and drops to 200 then back up to normal) and then will idle happy without issues. Also happens when shifting from park to drive/ reverse.... only the once and then is fine afterwards.

No loss of power at high speed or anything like that ...

Been 18months since i changed the filter, so will start with the easiest i guess!

Plugs I can earth out with wire on the block, am used to doing it all alone.

I was also thinking (long shot) that maybe there might be crap (rust?) floating around in your fuel rail/filter or gauze, its plausable. I read somewhere here i think that the fuel rail is capable of rusting out over time. The plunger in the isc might need some lube? Yeah i agree, go with the cheapest/easiest fix first, shouldnt cost that much to fix.

When's the last time you did an ECU retrain procedure? Mine was doing that, trying to reverse into my driveway and it was shuddering, retrain fixed it. Basically the ECU needs to relearn idle (not sure why it "forgets" it)
