Help please!!
How do you open up the auto aerial motor to replace the mast?

If it's anything like my Fairlane one it should be easy as pie. Undo and remove the locking collar at the base of the mast where it fixes to the guard. Then it should be a simple matter of (with the power supply connected), turning on the radio and driving the aerial mast up and out of the body of the unit. When the aerial is fully extended it should keep driving itself out without the locking collar to hold the mast in. Then just feed the new toothed nylon spiral down into the unit till it hits bottom, which should be the drive cog, then turn off the radio and let the motor pull everything back it till it retracts the aerial back into the plastic shaft. Fit it back into the guard and screw the locking collar back on and job's right. Next time you turn on the radio it'll raise the aerial till it hits the lock collar and stops.

Can't get the telescopic aerial bit out of the motor. Even opened the side and removed the broken pieces from within. Now how do you get the actual aerial out?? Undid the silver nut on top now what? Turned it on and off but sounds locked in. I htink I should wait til I get the replacement mast before I play any further.

Which bits are actually broken? What broken bits did you remove? The aerial should slide up and out. If it's jambed in then I'm stumped. The top should come off and the aerial mast should come out from the top. There is no other way for it to go. Is there a second collar holding the aerial in place perhaps? At the base of the aerial there is a brass shim type affair that surrounds and supports the aerial in the up position so it's a tight fit, maybe that's damaged and is snagging on something and won't allow the aerial to pop out of the sleeve. Sounds like you'll have yo pull it out completely for a closer examination.

I had to use needle nose pliers and a small flat blade screwdriver to be able to get the lowest portion of the old antenna out. It had broken into a few pieces. Took a short while but I got it out in the end. It was in pretty tight too - even with the radio on.

Thanks fellas will have a go now. Broken bits were the pieces of white toothed cord that engages the gearing.

Oh yeah. I had to dismantle the whole antenna after the new mast only went down a little. Turned out a 10cm piece of toothed cord was still rolled up inside the motor and had detached from the rest of it. Once removed, the antenna mast went in like a dream and works well.

Thanks again fellas. I'm now the expert in antenna installation.
 I just needed to use some force. Always worried about applying too much force. All done now for my little trip. Nothing worse than having no radio.
