My TE50 has a slight rattle under heavy throttle loads anyone have an idea what it might be?

Despite running pig rich they do have very aggressive timing so can ping under load even on 98 short of getting an edit throwing a decent fuel system cleaner & using good fuel can help.

Could be loose exhaust manifold bolts - though that's more like a ticking then a rattle.

My 165 does it too.. it's not fuel either as i've only ever run it on 98, and have changed brands to see if that helped. I'm running 100 octane in it now, still does it. For me i believe it's something air-intake related.. or maybe further up in the throttle body.. or a tuning/igniion issue. I'm just taking my time eliminating one thing after another until i catch it.

Does it sound like a metal spoon rattling around inside a steel can ? If so, we share the same annoyance.

My AU 5.0 does this too .. sounds like loose exhaust or something. I've look at it and can't see anything close enough to hit anything under load ... weird.

if it's similar to the EL engine, try crawling underneath and tapping the heat shield, see if that's doing it.

Hey guys, I have it as well in my AU 1 XR6.. (the rattling like fantz described) mine tends to go away once the revs get above 2100 ish. I read in another forum or maybe this forum but a different thread that it's just the Charcoal Cannister (The thing that burns away unburnt gasses that make it through to under your bonnet or something?)

Was told not to worry about it so I don't... I only ever use BP Ultimate or Shell Optimax (98 octane) if not available at least premium (95)... I've run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through too so im pretty sure it's not a fuel or timing problem.

pinging is caused by not enough fuel or too advanced timing. my guess is the fpr may be on the way out or even the fuel pump might not be able to flow enough, blocked fuel lines, etc. it shouldnt be a timing issue as these cars timing is all computer controlled so unless someone has removed the timing chain and not put it back on properly its more than likely a fuel issue
