Default 1988 Ford Laser Speedo Cable Replacement

bought a 1988 laser hatchback 1.6lt auto for my son to learn to drive and need to replace speedo cable

can i just thread the inner cable and if so is it easier from the top

if i have to replace lot how do i go about it
