Posted this in the AU section but thought I would share with the rest of the forum..This is what happens when you do 80 in a 110 zone..

My son was on his L's on the way back from Canberra when this happend. The vintage car was doing around 90.

Nothing shameful about teaching your learner to keep left when travelling on a multi lane road AND sticking to the speed limits. Prolly had the cruise on though did he. I would keep my eye on the rear and make mine pull off the road when holding up traffic on a single lane road. I can't stand the ignorance of some learner parents/teachers. I followed one once and the line up behind it was further than the eye could see, more than 30 cars and trucks that I could count.

I past a heap of vintage cars heading to Melbourne on saturday, some even had vintage caravans behind them.. According to the truckies they werent doing 90 tho :P

Happy to let him find out what two lane high driving is all about. Didn't let him use the crusie control, made him use the pedal all the way. Crusie can be a pain when the traffic is busy.

Haha thats funny...i was going along the F3 and an old holden came past me (was on my green p's at the time), and a few k's down the road there was him, on the side of the road, steam pooring out the front of the car

But good to see good road manners being taught.

And great to see something that old can do 90!!!

I remember seeing an XP coupe on the freeway north of Brisbane once.
It had to be a 6 cyclinder car as the tail pipe was only an inch or so in diameter.
He was merging onto the freeway... I was sitting on 110.
He over took me on the merge and kept going.
Im guessing 120... not bad for a little 6cyclinder.

Coming from a state where the L doesn't involve an 80 speed limit the concept seems very silly indeed. For one thing it creates huge speed differentials as shown in a 110 zone, for another how is the learner going to cope if they've not been taught to control the car at 100? I've come up on a learner in a 110 zone on the Hume while towing my caravan and couldn't believe how slow they were going.

Going by making learners do 80 on them, maybe they should be doing 15 or so in 100 zone 2 way roads?

haha id say them only being able to do 80 or so is a good thing, its easy enough to be doing 110 in a 100 zone so what would happen in a 110 zone with plenty of empty road?

Having survived the trip from Sydney to Canberra with my son driving and his L's and (and being overtaken by a vintage car) we did another trip today.
This time from Sydney to Belmont. Saw a few AUs on the way up and back and some cool muscle cars on a weekend cruise.

With the Canberra trip my son has only 3 hours left before he can got for his licence.

It would be good if all parents did the right thing and taught there kids properly how to drive, not just a few small trips and dodge up the rest of the hours, you should be proud mate

I'm assuming you and your son drove on the F3? Sydney to belmont?

I often wonder what parents are trying to teach their children by driving at two thirds the speed of the majority of traffic?

Think it must be terrifying for the poor kids if they looked in the rear view mirror.

If the parents took the learner driver along the Old Pacific Highway, they would get a chance to learn more than how to be an obstruction, at the same time the journey would take longer giving the kid more accumulated hours for their logbook.

how fast do you think the motorbike's will be moving on the old road? i'm guessing the approach speeds would be higher than the f3, and the visibility wouldn't be anywhere near as good.

as for the muscle cars you saw, there was an american muscle car show at terrigal today. that could explain some nicer cars out and about (hope they got back in the shed before the rain started)

The limit on the old road is 70km/h, and you know we've had more than a few m/c deaths on it over the last blah blah.

Not that care:-) the road use to be derestricted (//), then had limits of 80, 100km/h to ruin things.

i agree, making learner drivers become rolling roadblocks, slows the rest of us down.
