Just wondering where it is driven from, mine hasn't worked for a couple of months and then all of a sudden it'll come to life but die again after a few seconds...

Tacho feed comes directly from the computer.
Id say your tacho is either on its way out in the cluster or a wire in the cluster plug is not making proper contact or is partly/mostly broken..
