Cool Biggest Influence In Australian Car Industry

Who do you think has had the biggest influence in the Australian Car Industry?

Could it be Ford starting back in the 20's

Holden in 48

Senator John Button with his car plan

Or Evan Green killing off the Super Cars in the 70's who do you think?

Not a person, but a group - touring car drivers! The likes of Moffat, Johnson Brock etc., their predecessors, and the current mob.

Our love for racing what most of the public perceive as ordinary family cars, must have had a huge impact on the cars our local industry has built and designed over the years.

But seriously, it my be a bit left field, and it isn't strictly limited to Australia but I think the biggest influence/s is using plastics and CAD.
Without plastic what would bumbers be like, very square and not very good at absorbing impacts for example pedestrians. Not to mention what they would weigh. They would not look how plastic bumbers look, just compare any current Falcon to any Falcon pre-80's. Also without using CAD, cars would be so much more simplistic. From design, reliability, performance, features, looks, etc. How they used to design them with pen and paper I will never understand.

But to answer the question direct, I think the biggest influence on Australian Auto is both the Falcon and Kingswood/Commodore. Without the competitivness and rivalry they had/have, the quality of the product would never have improved from the 50s, and whatever one was around probably would have died out and been replaced and forgotten in the 60s, taking the local industry with it shortly after.

Seriously though, good competition is what should "drive" the auto industry.
This could be seen through Bathurst in its glory days, where Ford and Holden (and everyone game to take it up the mountain) slugged it out in "family" cars.

Nowadays all this is lost..

Probably the largest influence came from the faceless and largely nameless Detroit based decision makers who decided to invest in Australia by building the infrastructure (Geelong assembly plant for example) that made manufacture of unique Australian vehicles possible.

That we may see this end after 50 years (in the Ford world) is a tragedy but it doesn't take away from the foresight those pre-depression Americans had.

I agree, most of our designs of the last 50 years have been from detroit as far as holden and ford are concerned (and chrysler when they were here).

now that we have next to no tarriffs, it's cheaper for them to build and import, rather than build here.
