Angry Not again... I hate power windows

For the third time in as many years, my right rear power window has let go on me. The last two times, it was a case of a gear slipping off the end of the shaft. Both times I took it to the mechanic. This time it seems to be the same problem, but this time I want to try and fix it myself. Has anyone had the same issues, and is there any way I can get the gear to STAY ON! I am sick of it. It happened when I was going to wind the driver's window up but accidentally hit the wrong switch. Since the right rear was already up when I hit the switch, it tried to force it and it had nowhere to go. The thing is, every time I make that small mistake by hitting the wrong button, it wrecks the rear window. Is there a way to idiot-proof it, so I won't have to worry in the future?

lol mate, I think the only way is to be more observent in what you are touching :P
I had the same problem with my front left window, but took it to local mechanic and he did the trick so I found that this was the easiest way
While we are on the same topic, my windows get stuck in some parts, I was thinking of "lubing" them up to make them slide up and down easier (these are electric windows btw) but does anyone have any product in mind to get the job done?

Yeah, I can always hear mine struggling in the wet. As for the right rear, now I can lift it up and down with my hands! Talk about high security! Hopefully when I take the door trim off tomorrow, I can temporarily fix it.

get some EB2-EL rear ones. the EA uses a weird setup for the rears and are very weak in design. the later ones are much better. (but stilll stuff up :P)

Cheers for the info. Hopefully I won't have to resort to a new motor at this stage, but if it happens again, I'll definately have to go for an EL one or something. I'll check it all out tomorrow (that is if I have all the right tools available)

To stop windows from trying to go up when already up youcould fit a switched relay into your window electrics so that when window reaches top of run it cuts power to window motor and will only kick back in if you press down.
Would be a lttle tricky to design but fairly basic in operation

Good idea. It would take a bit of work, and would probably require a few sensors to determine when it gets to the top. Might be a future mod!

In the end, I went to take off the door trim and realised that I need an allen key for the door handles. Pity all my allen keys are all back at Gippsland. Guess I'll have to buy another set of them. To make things even worse, it appears my aircon has leaked out all the gas again! When it rains, it pours.

Think I'm glad I don't have power windows! Gotta say though, Mum's got a 1993 Camry Vienta with power everything including windows, and I don't think they've ever had a problem...

Bloody Fords :P

Nah, only when I've got other people in the car. Strange thing is I haven't had any trouble with the left rear, and it gets used about as much as the right rear! I've also replaced the front left, but haven't had too much drama with the driver's window (for a while I had to hit the switch numerous times to wind it up, but it somehow fixed itself). At least at the moment, the right rear is actually staying up, unlike the last couple of times where it kept slipping down. This is probably a good indication of how hard the window rubbers have gone!

sorry to hijack the thread but my drivers side power window is very slow to wind up til 2 thrids then speeds up to "normal speed" for the last third.

any Ideas?

I may have hijacked but say one thing, the manual winders in my old ef were that hard to wind the window up that the missus wouldn't even bother with the windows. good old aircon!

I am having problems with my el falcon electric windows. The window seems to drop down at the front when winding up and causes it to jam up and go up really slow. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what parts do I need??

yea mine does exactly the same, have to pull it back toward the rear of the car in order for it to go up the rest of the way. I took it into ford ages ago, they used powdered graphite, it helped for a few weeks then went back to how it is now.
