Goto www.carsales.com.au -> Research Cars -> Research Cars...

http://carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs_content.research_search

Search for the model, and it will tell you the diff ratios.

Ah, thanks mate.
I'm after more then just ratios.
I want all the details from the centres out.
Things like the centre diameter, crown wheel diameter, bearing sizes, axle diameter and spline etc.

All late model diff's are 28 spline. 4 pinion.

That's about all I know.

Afaik, the 3.08 housing is smaller than the 3.23 gear housing. So you can't put larger gears into the smaller 3.08 housing.

Useless put 3.73s in his wagon, but i'm not so sure if his were 3.23 standard.

Cheers

Ok thanks mate.
It's not to change ratio's it's to put in a Diff locker.
So if anyone has any more info on any of the dif componets that would be tops.

As far as i'm aware, you need to source Commodore gears. As they are smaller, and will go into the smaller 3.08 housing.

I put 3.45 Crownwheel and pinion gears from an e series into my AUII Fairmont wagon diff which was 3.23 as are all AU wagons sixes or eights and all non IRS AU Fairmonts. useless did 3.73 gears into his 3.23 diff AUI forte wagon.

I was told by CATS who did my diff that the ford 3.45 gears are different to the commodore ones and wouldn't fit.

Yup, thats right. Because you have a 3.23 housing, the 3.45 and 3.73 ford gears slot straight in. But because the standard falcon has a smaller 3.08 housing, we need to look for commodore gears, because they are smaller. (According to JMM).

I for one, would really like to know the truth, before i go ordering...

Thanks LG, that is great information. I was just going to buy the 3.45 grears from an AU or E series & get them bolted in, Jonbays style. If JMM stated that, that it is good enough for me. Which model commodores gears though?

That's what I'm still trying to find out. No one can tell me the answer. I'd say VT gears, but I'd still like to hear from a diff specialist about it. And exactly what gears we need to look at.

So i don't think you can put Ford 3.23 and 3.45, etc in a 3.08 housing. BW gears (like 3.73 & 3.9) might go in a 3.08 housing, i'm not sure.. Thats what I want to find out....

3.91 is fine for you Jim, but nearly all my Km's are highway & a 3.45 is as far as I will go. Was it an AU xr6?

Going air locker and compressor????
That would be fun indeed
-------------------------------

And a waste of money...

Coming from a 4wd background, mind you - I wouldn't use any form of locker other than mechanical. Any other kind of locker leaves you prone to failure and thus reverting to open-wheel which is fantastic when you're on beach sand.

Electric - need i say, electrical failure, reverts to open wheel.
Air locker - lose air pressure, lose diff lock.
Hydraulic lockers - lose hydraulic pressure... u guessed it...
Cable Lockers - cable snaps, what happens? no prizes given.

Only kind of lockers worth their salt are Detroit, or LOKKA or something based on a similar concept.
CIG and Mini-spool obviously work great, but suck in carparks, and it can be said with complete confidence that they are outrageously unsafe on tarmac - as fun as they can be ;)

With a detroit the locking action is applied by torque, and without sufficient torque they ratchet - allowing the wheels to turn at different speeds.
Downside from a sedan point of view - the way the force is applied causes a 'shifting' of the car's stance on the road during sudden locks/unlocks, so if you're someone who uses the throttle like a toggle switch, it makes the car's behaviour very erratic.

As far as on-road is concerned, a nice tight LSD is always the way to go if you can afford it, they have all the bonuses with none of the negatives.
Of course, they are totally WORTHLESS off road, no matter what anyone tells you, as there has to be resistance to engage the clutch packs, which leaves the possibility of spinning a single wheel if the other is in the air. Sure, if you have someone in the car who's willing to get out and hold the wheel... j/k ;)

If you had a 3.08 diff, what's stopping you from getting a full 3.23 or 3.45 diff disc to disc and bolting it up?

Or won't it bolt up?
