I drive an auto now but every car I buy from this date on will be a manual

It depends. I have both and I think it's horses for courses. My XR8 is manual and is suited to that type of car. On the other hand, I wouldn't want my Fairlane to be a manual.

i Find my ZF 6 spd a great compromise! is great as an auto... but you have 6 gears to play with in trippy mode..

Auto for the family car that gets all the shopping duties, school runs, family trips etc. (XR6 - ZF 6speed). Manual for the second car which is basically a personal transport so might as well have fun with it (1989 MX5).

I don't mind a good auto. And I prefer an auto when I'm stuck in stop start peak hour traffic after a day at work with a headache. But I don't mind rowing the gears for a bit of fun (and that extra bit of control). They both have their places.

I've recently had the pleasure of driving an FG Cab-Chassis with the French 5 speed on board. I'm massively impressed with it, despite coming from a Manual AUIII XR8- I think it may actually be quicker in some circumstances.

That said, in most conditions, my car was more economical. Only on the really bad city stuff and foot to the carpet did it use less than the XR8. I think this is almost entirely due to the auto trans as I found it would unlock the torque converter and downshift unnecessarily under certain circumstances. e.g. Driving the 6km climb up mount Ousley, FG Ute used 26L/100km average, AU XR8 uses 19L/100km.

Even in sequential mode it didn't quite do what I wanted/expected it to do. That's why I bought a manual- I think even a bad manual (which the T5 DEFINITELY IS) can be better than a good auto in some situations...

I recently got the curtsy call+email from Ford. My only gripe was the difficulty in getting the manual (check my posts). The six speed manual is a gem.

My mates turn around and look at me as though to say wtf is your problem.

Manual for me. Only two things were really important when I bought my XR.
It had to be Blueprint, and a manual.

and so you should be slagged off I used to mainly manuals but with sciatica I find a good auto so much easier with my weakened left leg. modern autos are a far cry from the old slushboxes with performance equal to or netter than a manual. I can drive but choose not to drive a manual as extended time in a manual maked my leg worse, so before you make comments like this you should consider who you are insulting and how wrong you could be , to quote Abraham Lincoln " I is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt"

True maybe I should have put a cavaet for people with a medical condition . Sorry if I offended anyone .But I think everyone gets where I'm coming from . Back in the day to allow my missus to drive my XW GT and XD I fitted Hillman Imp brake boosters to the clutch with a switch on the dash to open a valve to the inlet manifold . Only way she even had a hope of depressing the clutch .
