Default XR8 Auto problem

Good evening all,

This afternoon my Xr8s' automatic transmission, holds 1st until 2k rpm or 3k rpm depending on how quickly its accelerated. It will not shift beyond 2nd. And once i release the throttle is seems to go into neutral as it rpm drops to idle speed (just under 1k rpm). Diagnosis?

PS: ECU has been reset to no effect.

Posted by Xcabbi, Does it slap or rattle? Rattle is more to do with timing chains and tensioners. Slap is more to do with lifters, rings, bearings or GENIII boat anchors

Now this is a bit trickier. There's a fill hole on the front of the box (drivers side). Top it up with TQ95/95LE until it starts to spill out. I *think*.

Well i wont mess with it until i know for sure. Since if it is as something as simple as low fluid then ill be stoked.

i wouldnt be driving it either, untill you check the oil,

Grab a funnel and a long bit of 10mm hose, undo the nut on the drivers side of the gear box, make sure you have a bucket underneath where the fill point is, unless you want it spilt everywhere, shove the hose into the fill hole, then feed the hose to the outside of the car, stick the funnel into the other end of the hose and slowly poor the fluid down untill it starts to over flow out,

also forgot to mention, will be easier using ramps or a low spot, to get under the car

Although I would be suprised if it is low fluid, given that there is no leakage, or signs of it anywhere. Also it happened rather abruptly, shifts were fine only 10mins before I got back in and started it back up.

To back up everyone else here I did have a similar problem when I bought mine where it would slip into neutral, usually on cold mornings, and it turned out to be low fluid. Had it filled up and it hasn't done it a single time since. I didn't have any external leaks either.

Well scotty i'd be getting it serviced asap. Yes it could have only been serviced 7 months ago and it also could have been serviced never. It's $120 or so, get it done.

Best post this bloke has ever made.

Agreed, it's a 5 minute job so give it a go. You'll either need a decent length spanner or a extension for your ratchet as the exhaust can be a bit tricky to get around.

thanks RG, when i got mine done, was about 150 bucks for a service, after i got mine down, gear seemed to repsond a hell of a lot better to the foot,

Ok, took it in. Its lost the bands for 2nd and 4th, also engine braking clutch. It is being pulled apart as we speak, but its looking like a rebuild. :(

^^ seems to generally be around 2 grand. prices dont seem to variate that much.
