The XR6 is a great looking car but the S2 Fairmont has more options.

Larger brakes
Climate control
Rear electric Windows
Passenger Airbag

While it's true the series 2/3 AU's had some worthy updates, top of that list was the whole brake system, the XR's are a lot better looking. If you don't thrash your cars the smaller brakes on the AU1 won't be an issue. The VCT engine is good for a few more kilowatts over the base fairmont engine but I'd go the xr6 myself solely on the looks of the vehicles. The Black XR is a great looking car. This is one of those heart or head questions. Head says fairmont, heart says XR. Usually the heart wins lol.

I agree they are a very nice looking car. By the way XR6 listed above is not a vct

Its a downgrade IMHO.

And honestly, even the XR6 isnt 'sporty'

I would personally keep the current car you have and do a few upgrades and possible tune if you want a sleeper look.

Good luck which ever way you go, both are great cars anyway! Imo i would get the XR depending on how well cared for it is. Even if the s2 Fairmont has some better parts on it, its not a XR!

cheers, Maka

Age wise it's a downgrade, and because it's a S1.

However, an XR is an upgrade over a Fairmont for me, a far better drivers car all round.

Fairmonts are soft hat wearing old mans cars.

but you can always drop a fairmont add a sway bar, some 17's and good wheel alignment and will be better than an xr.

Not IMO.
A Fairmont will always have that silly electronic climate control, and look like an old mans car.

buy an XR nose and XR springs, swaybars and transplant them onto your Fairmont then you'll have the best of both worlds.

I have the AU2 Monty & it'll easily keep pace with Xr's & rides just as good if not a little better. Both it & I looooove corners!

Personally, I'm not a fan of the XR front ends. I much prefer the "wolf in sheeps clothing" approach.

Check out my signature below.
Not mentioned is a camber & castor adjuster kit fitted to the front end

Thanks to all for the replies. Looking at keeping the Mont and with the changeover change ill improve the mont with it. Thanks again, the AU is truly an underated car and truly a nice car to drive.

I'd keep the Mont. Although I love the XRs just as much, Id rather have that bit of extra luxury, and try to get a bit of sports into the mix. Like a tickford optioned Fairmont Ghia.

Everybody's opinion is different - I reckon P250's look so much better than a normal AU ute. Clearly you didn't agree.

I would not buy an S1 AU unless it was a T series and even then it would have to be something pretty special.

I didn't? How so? I don't recall ever saying that, feel free to quote it...

In any case, this thread isn't about us disagreeing with one another, it's about the OP asking what our thoughts are.

Where's the bodykit from your P250?

Yep, it is. And mine are that there's no way I'd go backwards to an S1, XR or not.

Sitting in my mezzanine.

What does that have to do with you claiming I think a normal AU ute looks better than a P250?

The S2 Fairmont will be transformed with a set of new springs and bilstein or koni shocks. At least you know the history of your current car, I'd hang onto it and make a few improvements to get more enjoyment out of it.

Ive got 2 series 1 XR8s. 1 sedan and 1 ute and i think they're great cars.
I never understood negativity surrounding S1 AU XRs.

Didnt the AU Fairmont have the Tickford engine anyway?

Ghia had the Tickford motor.

Nothing wrong at all with series 1 Au's, they are all good maybe a bit spartan in the trinkets & brake area's. I rate their reliability better than s2 because of the lack of trinkets.

cheers, Maka
