My Pajero has now done 85,000km since new. Not had one DPF light come on once. 99% of the time this vehicle is used on VERY short trips for school runs. Occasionally it will do 1000km in a week but thats once every 3 months.
I know when its trying to do a burn off, as the fuel consumption will go through the roof for a short period of time... EG. Driving @ 100kph, normal consumption would be 9.5 or thereabouts, when its doing a burn off, its about 12-13 litres per 100km... after 5 minutes, it just settles down and gets on with business. NS Pajero's were/are notorious for having problems with DPF, so either people have worse driving conditions than what i have used mine, or I have just been lucky. Definitely has one fitted, as it has never blown one puff of black smoke, and the exhaust is pretty much completely clean, when it comes wash time..... |

But it does the same job on a non DI engine as it would on a DI version. Ford have there own version from Motorcraft called Carbon Clean. |

Thanks to everyone for their posts. I think a lot has to do with where in the exhaust system the DPF is located, the closer to the engine where its hotter, generally the better. My diesel had its DPF about three quarters of the way down its exhaust system. Another thing is that its quite likely manufacturers are now designing DPF's that are more user firendly, (easier to achieve effective regeneration across a broader spectrum of operating conditions), than they used to be.

A Captiva? I strongly suggest you look up all the quality issues with Captiva. Just about every other car in its class is superior in nearly every way.

Yeah, I've been reading heaps on them and it doesn't look good. The missus likes them but I will have to try to steer her away.

The Captiva is just a jacked up Epica. As the driver of a work provided Epica for the last three years I suggest you purchase a bicycle!
Our work fleet is changing over to diesel Cruzes. Lots of issues with DPFs. People having to sit in their cars for 10 minute parked whilst they clean............ truly hopeless |

I am trying to convice my missus that a Jeep Cherokee Limited will be big enough for us...and probably a little more capable off road for me and the son to go bush/fish. I don't like my chances..she wants 7 seats.

Probably better off with a Territory if she wants 7 seats, or even a couple year old Mitsubishi Outlander VRX.

smoo - The soot trapped in the DPF is burned into ash as part of the regeneration process but the ash slowly builds up over time inside the DPF so the DPF's will need periodic cleaning or replacement.
DPF's are a bullcrap device put in place to meet the B.S. requirements of the Global warming B.S. poltical correct greenies. My diesel vehicle simply didn't work properly with the DPF in place and I would be extremly reluctant to buy another diesel from any manufacturer with a DPF. Diesel Terry hasn't got one...that would be my choice if I was in the market for that sort of vehicle. No DPF, they handle and go pretty well, lay-down maziare hand if you ask me. |

Thats interesting because I've got a 2010 TDCI Focus and it doesn't have a DPF? My Focus is in at 4B Fabrications and Performance in Carrum Downs at the moment, having more tuning done, they turned off EGR as well for me I believe, it can be done through software so they would be able to disable DPF features and remove it no doubt. I'll send you a PM with their number. Odd problem though, wonder why your Focus has a DPF and mine doesnt? |

Do Mitsubishi Tritons have DPFs at all, thinking of getting one as a work car.
