drive both and decide for sure, probably half the battle is working out how hard a destination you wan`t to go to,
i had an old dedicated 4wd years ago not much comfort, built like a brick--------, i had a lot of fun in it but it always felt like a light truck, and i found having the hard core scrubber actually gave me more confidence(over confidence really) to go to that harder destination, as a result i ended up winching and digging myself out generally getting myself in the poo more often than i care to admit, in the end i wanted something with a bit more go and comfort, i don`t know if the ranger need those things but you will know when you drive it, good luck.

I'd be going Wildtrack, in fact later this year there's going to be one sitting in our driveway - well paddock lol

We have recently purchased a Ranga for maintenance work and got the tray model, but the tray supplied is fairly long. This has created a problem with a saggy rear end when loaded with just 200kg's. Etheridge Ford had to supply and fit heavier rear springs to rectify under warranty. Handling is average now.

Is it a genuine Ford tray or an aftermarket option?

I think this one you have to make up your own mind about. People are giving all sorts of valid reasons for one over the other. For me, it's all about the fun factor. I would go the Ranger I5 diesel with a manual, 4x4. To me, that is much more exciting than a family crossover. Sure the Territory will be more car like, and be more comfortable, but I think the Ranger will be very good for comfort anyway, it's not like it will be a pain to drive.

Ranger pros: Versatility, ruggedness, dependability, feels more truck like, resale value, part-time 4x4, towing, load carrying, more fun

Territory pros: car-like, 7 seater, AWD, maneuverability

Haven't driven a Ranger or an SZ Terri for that matter, but to be honest I don't think I could live with a Ranger style ute for day to day driving, I could be wrong but nearly everything in that category handles like a truck so im assuming the ranger would be no different, for the few times a year you actually need it.

And on the Terri side I don't think I could bring myself to shell over the money they are asking for a Titanium Territory. Its the same price as an entry level V6TDI Touareg and the equipment levels are pretty comparable, probably even more in the VW's favor.

Anyway thats just my personal opinion, having driven a few Touareg's and at that price point, thats what I'd go for.

For the amount of times your likely to go off road I think the Terry would be better. Any AWD car that more than compares to the BMW for driveability has got to be a great vehicle.

It would be more comfortable and the rear area can be configured in a few different ways.

Must be something seriously wrong there, I deal with an entire council fleet of PJ/PK Rangers and the only time I've seen issues like that is when they are continuously towing and carrying maximum load.

Go the Territory, in all my years of asking people about their cars only the Territory has matched the Magna in having people rave on about how good their cars are.

Territory will be quieter, more comfortable, handle better, tow better, be more roomy, be more secure for cargo, safer, cheaper to fix.

As it stands, given most Ford dealers can barely be trusted with the most basic Falcon, let alone a complex T/D 4wd....maybe look at Hilux/Navara/Amarok?

I have a Territory and as good as it is, for what you want, the ranger would be better IF you can fit the bike in the tray. If you need a trailer either way, might as well for the Territory as it's a better "car" type SUV/4WD.

The ranger doesn't hold its value better than any other ute on the market. You have to sell them before they do 30,000kms before they dive in value.

You mean 2.7t...

For real towing, you just need an F250
