Default Re: Do you think a dealer will negotiate a better price without a trade in???

Keep in mind, comagutsa and others, whatever work (modifications - wheels, exhaust, etc) you have done to your trade in amounts for zero when it comes to a trade in.

In fact, it could potentially hamper it because most valuers aren't car enthusiasts and see these types of things and consider the car thrashed. Then they start looking for a reason to dislike it...

yes i know that but even if it was stock they still would of offerend only that low $ as a trade in and i still would of sold it for twice as much as they wanted to give and i guarantee they would of sold it for $19k.

you are better off selling your car private than trading and most people only trade in theirs as the can't be bothered selling.

OR (and its a big "OR"), throw the dealer the keys to the piece of rubbish you're offloading and be done with it. Then drive off in your shiny new car. Holding aside the economics of it all which Flappist has quite succinctly outlined, when you trade a car in, you're paying for the luxury of throwing the dealer the keys and never looking back. You know it, and they know it.

They've got you over a barrel and they know that most people who come through the door and spend good coin on a newbie usually are in full time employment, work hard, and have better things to do with their weekends other than putting up with the "private car for sale" circus. Its a pretty tried and tested formula.

Spot on....When I was young and poor private selling was the way to go - better price if you could get over the tyre kickers and no shows. These days I'd rather pay for the convenience by taking a lesser price for my oldie and being done with it..Don't have the time or patience for weeks on end of advertising and dicking around...Drive in , throw the keys, drive out...you beauty!.
