I hope its not a possum, I got up in the roof this arvo and there were droppings about 1-1.5 cm long so I'm guessing rats.
Could only find one rat trap so thats now set and ready for action tonight (I hope)

dont expect the traps to work overnight. Rats are neolithic and it takes them a while to get used to new things - if they see something new in their area (like a trap), they will stay away from it until they get used to it being there.

Be environmentally friendly and get a carpet snake or similar non poisonous snake variety and keep it in the ceiling for a while and goodbye to mice, rats and possums. What doesn't get eaten won't hang around.

don't think a snake would like the insulation bats too much, could throw my insane dog up there sometimes though!

I suggest you put dried droppings and keep in mind where it is. A live snake may work, but you may have trouble getting tradies up there in the future.
Would Hoop Snake droppings work ?

They always get rid of Drop Bears...

Mothballs emit a smell that possums hate incidentally, although we only threw them up in the roof for good measure after finding the brush tail possum was getting in through a slipped ridge tile. Once fixed, they never came back.

Having said that, when the air con fridgy guy left off 3 roof tiles over night when fitting our split system, and a brush tail came into the attic to investigate...this was just in a 24 hour period, so they don't hang around ! Waited til it crept out at 9pm the next night, then climbed up and replaced the tiles.

We get roof rats every year, but ratsak gets shot of them nicely. Being a 1960's weatherboard, there are heaps of ways they get up there, usually through walls and places where cabling and water pipes are channelled up through the noggins.

If it's rats then i've had a good success rate with Bromokil blocks, less messy than granules etc. As said before they generally go away looking for water so rarely stay in roof or cavitys. Never had a stinky one yet. If it's a possum then trapping and releasing is probably better. You may need to use a deterant to stop them comming back so if you don't mind your roof smelling like a urinal then use the cakes. Good luck.

even mice are frigen noisy and dont always fall for traps.

I had a simular issue, I tried dozens of different baits, and traps. I got on to some stuff that looks like green muesli I dont remember who made it but it took about a week and the sound seased

Dunno about the Urinal Cakes but Bromakil Blocks are a good choice if youre sure the problem is mice. Talon, Contrac etc all also work but from memory Contrac is only available to licensed pesties.

Yes thats what I used ..... the Bromakil blocks did work very well.. Actually put them under the house and where I could keep an eye on it and they tend to go away very quickly!

i'd be careful what you do as far as if it is a possum, as some possum species (ie ringtail possum) are protected species, and you'd be up for hefty fines if you even try move them without a possum officer present.
so find out what it is before you nuke every creature in your roofspace

gotta love the noises possums make : , sounds like a small dog in your roofspace, and the screeching noises sounds like something demonic.
the noises always get worse around mating season (spring i think?)
but the possums living in my roof are protected, so there's not much i'm allowed to do, besides i'm getting used to it now we've been here 2 years with them, and they were here before us lol
