Does this take hold for hybrids too? IE the existing fleet of hybrid cars will start copping extra road user charges on top of the fuel they already purchase?

Or is it just for EVs?

To be honest I did read the article, but I would imagine Hybrids would get some sort of user charges too

edit article says plug in Hybrid doesn't mention 'Hybrid' by itself

Not too sure what Seppo politicians have to do with our pricing

Yes EVs pay rego which I presume is similiar to ICE powered vehicles. The proposed tax on EVs is to cover the fuel tax which they don’t pay.You will find that rego fees don’t contribute much to roads, most of the fee is Ins and a lot is to pay the administration costs. The excise on fuel is supposed to go to roads, but a lot finishes up in general revenue rather than roads.

I was actually referencing the line Why should it cost me $7-800 per year to drive on the roads, yet you in your EV can drive on the same roads for nothing, which is not entirely correct. They don't drive on the same roads for nothing. Annual registration is still paid, in Vic, between 700 and 800.

Sorry I should have questioned, why should it cost me $7-800 more to drive on the same roads than you in your EV.

I cant see how in the next few years this "tax" wont roll over onto every other vehicle including motor bikes.. this is just the governments way to make up for future lost revenue and im sure the 2.5 cents will increase as the ice taxed vehicles decline in feul revenue

So using your theory we should be paying 70c per litre like the USA.

Everyone hates paying taxes, but we all like the nice roads we drive on.

I would happily pay the tax if i owned an electric car. If its based on mileage, even better. That more closely matches the tax paid based on fuel consumption.

The only people taking issue with it are those that believe every thing should be free.
People that never grew up, from the times their mums filed up their water bottles for school.

Hmmm...

We travel close to 15,000km per year.

Pallas' proposed "infrastructure tax" on a fully electric vehicle is 2.5c (?) per km travelled and so if we were to use an electric vehicle there would be a yearly cost of $375.00.

We have a vehicle that uses 5.5 litres per 100 km. So in a year it will use 5.5 x 150 litres of fuel. I'm not sure what the GST bite per litre of fuel is, but I'll allow 15c per litre (I think it is some what less than that). This gives a GST bite of $123.75 per annum. And I pay this in little bites as I buy fuel!

Doing the calculation a little bit differently, the GST per km figure for using diesel (in our case) is 0.825 c/km.

So going fully electric will cost us three times as much in taxes paid either directly or indirectly. And this does not take into account the higher capital cost of the electric vehicle.

I, too, believe in paying a fair share for the convenience of a reasonable road network, but I can't see that the figures shown above will be the kind of incentive that will convince a lot of people to minimise their carbon footprint.

A further consideration is that the proposal, being State based can (and probably will) be indexed using movement in the CPI, or simply increased on a whim by regulation. GST increases, in contrast, require a complicated process among the State and Federal governments to change.

Many of us will remember that Howard sold the GST on the basis that it would replace ALL state taxes of various sorts. I don't think that has happened.

Cheers

You are leaving out the 40+c per litre in fuel excise which the EV driver doesn’t pay plus the10-12c per litre of gst

Well there a wee thing called foreign exchange ie USD to AUD and our greedy excise means we are about on par for the actual oil pricing component

RE Howard GST
Problem was the now defunct Democrats wanted no GST on food and the State govts who receive 100% of the GST pie were short changed as a consequence, so left all the state taxes in place , put the 2 together and they got more to waste , qld a classic case with the govt mostly labor last 30 years luckily still afloat due to overspending

Well isn't that the point of owning a EV? low emissions, low running costs, save the environment, make the greenie snowflakes happy?...you have governments all around the world shoving the Environmental message down our throats at every opportunity. People start to make a difference, such as buying EV's and rather than giving incentives and making it attractive, they do the opposite.
I find that ridiculous.

I guess money you save on fuel can go into lovely green airplane travel or that trip on an environmental nightmare, "The Cruiseship".

Makes me wonder if something like the Nissan Note e-power is going to cop the 2.5c tax as well as the fuel excise?

It's an EV but no plug in charging, it uses a 1.2L 3 cyl engine to act solely as a generator to provide charge to a tiny battery that powers the electric motor.

Think of a diesel electric train, but unleaded and tiny lol

There's s few of these in VIC for sale that have been imported, I really like the concept, this would work perfectly for me and a logical replacement for my TDCI Focus.

However I'm not interested in paying extra taxes as well as taxes on fuel lol.

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...AG-AD-19035908

https://www.j-spec.com.au/featured/2...smo-18095.html

Nismo version 100KW/320NM - same as my TDCI Focus in factory trim.

It's hard to find a replacement daily, it's torquey as but uses SFA fuel, I've been averaging 5.5L/100km over the past 200,000km, still haven't done brakes yet.hasvtge factory pads and rotors it come off the production line with.

Or they could build the 1.2L engine to directly power the car. I don't really get the whole hybrid thing.

Instant power and torque the moment an electric motor starts turning - it's much nicer to drive than a traditional car.

Have your peak torque at 1 RPM instead of 1500RPM in the case of Ford Ecoboost engine.

The kicker with the Note e power is it's an EV without the range anxiety issues or charging problem, takes 5 minutes to 'recharge' and it costs sub $40K - 1300km to a tank and 3L/100km of E10 sounds good to me in a car that makes the same power and torque at 1RPM as my Focus does at 4000/2000 RPM

I'm no enviro-flog but I love a dirty Chai.

Fair call but Franco, when you (or Cav for that matter) buy a Chinese electric vehicle, it will truly be a sad day.

Nice new, wide, smooth roads with median strips and side barriers. Cars with nice crumple zones, 10 airbags, autonomous tech that can stop and keep a lane and speed limits 15% lower than the 60s and 70s so they have more opportunity to charge the speeding tax.

It's weird how in NSW the minimum demerit points for speeding use to be 3 but now it's 1. You can pay the speeding tax 12 times now before losing your licence rather than 4.
