WOW. I didn't realise that manual wasn't an option with the 200 series. I remember many years ago that manual was the only transmission you got unless you wanted an upper spec model Sahara then you could get an auto.
My how things have changed. Probably won't be long before you can't get ANY 4WD in this country with a manual transmission.

Have driven the new Landcruiser and found to be woefully underbraked as well as having a bit too much turbo lag.

To me barebones would mean getting rid of electric windows, carpets, cheap seat covers, rubber mats, cheap and nasty door cards and getting rid of that hugely heavy twin turbo...

Its $80k because it's for the mining industry. Everyone knows its cost plus 5000000000000000000000000000000%

No real competitors and a cornered market means you can pretty much charge what you like.

Ford should get on this bandwagon with some stripped out dual cab F150's with diesel engines.

You ever taken apart a Denso starter motor? They're an excellent design, the only thing that ever goes wrong with them is they eventually smash out the contacts on the solenoid, thats it.

And your point is?
I know of one landcruiser here which had its starter fail within 6months.
Its owner was impressed he had to leave his car at Toyota for 2days for a simple thing like a stuffed starter.

I have seen very expensive starters on aircraft fall apart within months of installing them (many years ago...)

My point is its a good design? Its better than the normal starters out there. Theres heaps of crap in stupid spots in every manufacturers cars.

Why does Honda still use tappets, which need adjusting every 40,000km rather than hydraulic lifters which self adjust?

Why do you have to take off the drivers side wheel on a 2006 Civic to change the oil filter?

Why do you have to drop the fuel tank in a Civic Hybrid to change the fuel filter which is in the tank? Why did they put the battery bank on top of the access hatch?

Why did the exhaust side of the engine change from the front to the back after a certain point on Honda cars?

Why is the turbo between the engine and the firewall on my TDCI Focus? Why is there an intake restrictor, why does the intake end up under a plastic cover?

Why does the Falcon have a space saver spare?

Why does the Ford Festiva built by Kia, based on the Mazda 121 and have a Mazda B5 engine and sold as a Ford?

Theres endless amount of useless crap I can list about weird or stupid things across every manufacturers.

My how things have changed. Probably won't be long before you can't get ANY 4WD in this country with a manual transmission.
back in the 90s when i did my time i worked on lots of cruisers,hj-hzj and 80 series and they were very uncomfortable but relatively easy to work on.Once they put magna door handles on the 100 i just laughed at cruisers from then on
have they even changed the ugly plastic interiors and seats in the utes after 20 years?

Only in the 200 series, in aus they are auto only, over seas they are available with the manual, but the motor drops down to the single turbo unit.

All the 70 series is manual only in aus.

I cannot believe that a povo pack 200 costs more than a top of the Line Jeep Grand Cherokee. They are equally able off road and towing, what is the big appeal the mines have with Landcruisers ?

Probably something to do with the variable valve timing. That was Mitsubishi's reasoning anyway.

80,000 seams like massive amount for a barebone landy.

Most of the mines around here have hilux or prado.
I'm actually in a prado now at a mine in pouring rain. The prado handled the muddy tracks easily.

But I guess in places lik WA they may require the LC capability.

The railway uses Prado's out here...they get a flogging from some drivers and don't exactly get babied, but they seem to be handling it well. Comfy on long highway drives and they still have the off road capability.

Yes, for some reason they're all going V8 with the big four wheel drives...they must think people enjoy paying over a grand a year for rego. When we had our six cylinder 4.2 turbo diesel 100 series Landcruiser, I also drove a couple of rental vehicles the railway got out here. They were new troopies, fitted with the V8 turbo diesel. Honestly, I couldn't feel any difference between them and the six cylinder in our 'cruiser...certainly not enough to justify the extra insurance and rego cost of the V8 over the six.

Another thing annoying the "hard core" fourbie owners is the new Patrol...it will be independant suspension front and rear. The reason, Nissan says, is that worldwide surveys have shown that only 13% of four wheel drives are ever used "off road", and far less actually used in "extreme" conditions.

Why spend tens of millions over-engineering something for a purpose that only a tiny percentage of your buyers will ever actually do?
