Monopoly? https://www.potatopro.com/companies/...tern-australia

Quote:
Western Australia has a bustling potato industry with production standing at nearly 100,000 ton per year. Of this volume 78 (many 2nd or 3rd generation) growers produce around 50,000t a year for the fresh market with the remaining volume split across the seed, processing and export sectors.

There there is the Mitolo Group in SA. https://afdj.com.au/mitolo-group-bec...tato-producer/

The first articles saying we produce 68000 tonnes then the second 100000 tons, so which one is it? I'm doubting these links you keep posting.

Lets face it I think industry co-ops and contract growing is a good thing and as far as you're concerned it's as good as communism(post 12 before the edit). If you think that look out for the wine industry then, we revolved around contract growing and industry co-op's.
When the sleeping giant that is the Viticulture industry finally rises they're going to make the CCP look like a group of Swifty's after a few concert pre drinks of passion pop and cruisers

This is going up and down like a brides nightie, lets throw in some article from previous decades then to skew the context even further.

As both an Economist and Accountant (FCPA) I can see no justification for the Potato, Egg or other similar marketing authorities. They simply stile competition and make farmers strategically lazy. Most farmers have to make a choice about what to grow each year and gamble on what the market will return. Controlling what farmers grow also limist what consumers can buy. The "Karen" farmer jumping up and down in France are in part a result of past over regulation of the markets and producers. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnSXwrlrwIE and how over-regulated farmers in the UK and Europe are. The only downside I can see in getting rid of of the Spud body and deregulating, is that ultimately too many farmers following others into, what was initially, the extremely lucrative avocado growing business creating an excess demand for water in the South West so that just about all running water was dammed exacerbating existing serious water salination and associated environmental issues.

And as both a trade and Dip Horticulturalist and trade Viticulturalist I can see a justification for such industry co-op's.
I've heard all of this before, the bureaucracy in the Ivory tower telling the peasants in the fields whats good for them. We're just going around in circles with each other now and neither is budging. Fair enough.
I'll just keep supporting my small, local growers you keep supporting your choice of supplier

BTW I grew up on a dairy farm in the south west in extreme poverty so I think I know a thing or two about be a peasant in the field too.

They ones in question were not co-ops (I certainly have no objection to freely formed co-ops) they were quasi autonomous semi Government authorities; in fact very much ivory tower sitters telling growers what type and volume of spuds they could grow,

Funny you mention Avo's, a perfect example of an industry that needs regulation.
Everyone jumped on the bandwagon, experienced producers looking to diversify, small holders, the usual tax evaders, I even know some restaurateurs that started planting as they thought it was the answer to them paying high prices for Avo's .

Hows that going for them? Prices are the lowest I've seen due to glut and apparently they're ruining the environment doing it.
I'm sure you can find an article to challenge that, but Blue, don't waste your time, once again I have my opinion you have yours
