Default XR8 220 Stock Exhaust Config

Can somebody tell me what the stock exhaust setup was on an XR8 220.

ie:

- twin all the way or twin into a single
- pipe sizes
- quantity and type of mufflers
- location of resonators

Twin all the way. Pretty sure it's 2.25" pipe (it's been so long since I removed mine). Has 2 mufflers, both are 2 in, 2 out.

4-1 extractors, 2.25" twin pipes with 'H' balance pipe, into center offset mufflers, exits out of mufflers in 2" pipes into twin in/out resonator.

No I'm just going bananas with the conflicting advice I'm getting from exhaust shops, regarding what to put behind the the Pacey 4001s I'm fitting. I needed a starting point.

I'm starting with a bog standard 175kw motor. It's already got a Tickford intake and K&N. Exhaust is the next step, to be followed by a Crane 2031...and LPG. I figured if the stock XR system was good for 220kw, thats probably good enough for me.

I'm after low and mid range torque. I actually intend to fit a single - and I wrongly assumed the XRs had singles.

A few shops have told me that there isn't enough room to put twin pipes around the IRS - clearly not the case.

I few have also said that 3" single won't give me enough back pressure for what I want. Stuffed if I know.

I also want it to rumble a bit, but not be two loud. Pulling up at clients in a car you can hear two blocks away isn't a good look. Hence my interest in the mufflers and resonators used on the XR.

3" single not enough pressure. BS.

my Dads EL Fairmont 5 Litre had a 3" single and it worked just fine. go to a different shop.

OK, the consensus form everybody here is that 3" is fine, so that's what I'll do.

I should have listened to what Casper said when I first raised this in a separate thread a couple of weeks ago. My head wouldn't be spinning now.

I have now started another thread in Windsor V8 Tech at:

http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=66257

After convincing myself I would go with the 4001's I'm looking at Hurricanes again....

Yes I had a set of Pacemakers(PH4000) to go on the E7 head single 3" with turbo mufflers on my EB Ghia (R.I.P) I know the suspension is different and doesnt answer your question to whether it will fit your AU but I just want to let you know that the increse in performance was really really good, the only down side I found with the 3" system was the drone when you sat on 100 - 115kmph which got a bit annoying. But taking off and urban driving sounded pretty bloody good. My current car AUII Ghia has a twin 2.25 system from the ex manifold to the tail pipe so yes it will fit yours, let us know what you go with and how it performs, enjoy

That's exactly the kind of thing that would drive me bats. Would a resonator fix this?

I wouldn't run 3" single for quids !
I too love my car tuff sounding but not boy racer and 3" single is just that !
Only a handful with 8's run single system's on the forums I notice, majority are running twin 21/4 or 2 1/2.

On my AUII XR8 ute, I ran dual 2.5's with two large hotdogs up front and a couple of small ones before the tips, all behind some Hurricane headers.

It gave a lovely meaty beat and droned not at all, even though it was an auto.

I suspect that it may be a bit louder than what you are looking for though. Same system with some cans rather than the front dogs would probably be more appropriate.

BD - have you heard a decent 3" single system? The sound cannot be matched, except possible by a twin system with X pipe. It is deep and throaty - I don't know where you get boy racer from - that would be a single 3" on a six, especially Bucky's boy racer. LOL.

Overall pipe diameter and air volume between twin 2.25" (works out to total of 205 cm3 per metre length of pipe) and single 3" (182 cm3) is pretty close, so back pressure isnt an issue, especially if you have mods to help the thing inhale better (RRs, cam or both). As a comparison, twin 2" works out to 162 cm3, so single 3" is smack in the middle.

Is Bucky going to be in this thread ? Oh... hang on we are talking about 8's and performance 2 things he can't bling lol....

Ofcourse I have heard single's, yes on song they do sound tuff but too noisy for me.
Also I recall the thread starter being concerned of that and drone.
Now I'm sure a good exhaust guy could satisfy his needs but after a few goes I reckon.

3" will be fine, as will dual 2.5". Sound will be as much about muffler and resonator design as anything else.

I dont think mine sounds "boy racer", but whatever....everyone's tastes are different ;)

Mine drones between 50-60, bad enough to drive me nuts, but not at any other speed thankfully.

Be careful taking advice from people that talk about needing back pressure to make more torque :P

For what its worth, I bought my 3" systen becuase it was cheap. I plan on replacing it with something better at some stage....most likely dual 2.5" with some top shelf mufflers.

Do a search for god sake! there has been 100 threads on this very topic, you can work your way through the BS & come up with a system that works, doesn't drone, & makes power!! If thats what your looking for..

Twin 2 1/2 with "X" balance pipe, straight through mufflers into a twin entry/exit rear muffler.
