The guy with the Pursuit 250 on ebay just gave me a second chance offer to buy at $17001 which was my highest bid.

there are 5 people that bid higher than you. im going to make the guess that he had his mates bid the price up for him and it back fired.
if you really want it then buy it, but dont give him a cent till you have the keys in your hand and the car in sight.
get it checked out buy RACV (or whatever it is where you are) as well.

ask if you can use an escrow service ( an independent 3rd party which holds money til buyer gets goods)

Surely you would do the tranasaction face to face... I know I would't part with $17,000 without seeing the car first! Even if it's out of state it's only a very small percentage of what you are paying to fly over and check it out

Sounds very sus to me.
With all the other bids you would have to ask yourself how come none of the others that were beaten don't want to buy it.
You would think he would offer it to the next highest bidder if the highest bid fell through.
Why is he offering it to the 5th bidder down the list.
Be very wary and if you do buy it check for tampering with VIN numbers and engine numbers etc.
As suggested don't pay with direct debit, see the person selling it face to face and make sure you buy it at their place ( i.e. the address on the rego papers ). Also check the sellers license name and picture against those on reg papers.
Would hate to see you do your dough, although would be a bargain if everything is O.K.

Have you emailed sheriff357 (ebay) and asked why he declined the ute?
He's bought stuff off stomp747 before. :

just an update-:

The seller contacted me by email and offer the car. I offered to go to Coffs Harbour and personally inspect the vehicle and pay with "CASH" The reply was -:

Here is how the process works:
- you give me your ebay id
- I start a transaction with eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection
- they send you the payment instructions
- you send a deposit to them as they will tell you
- they confirm me that they secured the funds
- I deliver the product to you
- you receive and accept the product
- after you agree with the condition of the product you send me the remaining funds
If the product is not like I described you will have to ship it back in 30 business days on my expense and ebay will refund you the entire amount you have sent to them.

I just wonder why it wouldn't be suitable for me to attend and inspect the vehicle in a private transaction given that it is some time since the auction ended.

Like you said seems a little suss. If he agreed I would be there by now and have another nice ute.

Haven't read all the posts but I get these emails all the time. I fhe asked you to reply to him directly (on an aol or yahoo email etc) then it is dodgy. Go to the original seller through the auction "ask a seller a question" and ask him if the email came from him. That will sort the wood from the trees.

I know someone who is visiting rellies in Coffs. I think they are there for a couple more days.

PM me if you can get address for the ute and I'll try and contact to see if they can drop around and make sure the car exists.

Anyone who doesn't want to meet face to face with a cash buyer is a fraud.

demand that the sale is done face to face. you are under no obligation by Ebay to buy teh car. if you are not happy with the car, leave.
ask him again to do a face to face transaction (state that if you buy the car you will pay the $17000 without haggling the price). if he still refuses tell him your not doing business with him and report him to ebay as a fraud.
id double check those Vin numbers too and see if they come up in his name (if possible).
