This is scary

G'day all...I work at a local High School as an EFA ...One of my areas is the Art Room so I've got to know Jill the art teacher..She fairly recently bought a VW Tiguan..Recently I was getting fuel and saw Jill at the servo after work about to drive the 45 kms or so home but with a worried look on her face..I asked her what was up and she said the car was showing a fault check warning message..and the car was inexplicably stalling without notice..
The mechanic wasn't convinced that it was okay to drive home but she rang her husband to meet her along the way.. She didn't work last week so I didn't get to find out what the VW people told her..Yesterday she told me that the component that was failing was $1700 and they found another brake issue that was over $1200...all up close to 3K..
Then she informed me that one of her friends owns a Skoda Octavia with VW powerplant that does exactly the same thing..
She is so nervous now that this will happen again and potentially in a high risk place like an intersection , rail crossing or overtaking that she's going to take a financial hit to get out of this vehicle..
I don't blame her...I believe the other lady's husband was convinced it was her driving so to prove a point he took it for a run..He didn't even make it onto the highway..
So glad our dear old Fords rarely have such problems..Anyone know if VW have had big issues with this problem ?

If you don't think Fords have expensive problems then maybe have a look at other parts of the forum. Items such as transmission milkshake.

But in saying that the Fords I have owned have been great had some problems couple major ones but still love them.

I had a Ford rental car that was so bad I had to take it back to the rental angency because it felt unsafe to drive. Mums had a VW for 8 years and had no real issues at all.
Guess it depends on the indervidual car.

But yes, VW are very expensive for service and repairs.

There is a perception out there now that if a car has a European badge on it, you're buying into the best quality. Not the case folks. Particularly with the cheaper euro offerings, for example- Volkswagen Tuguan & Golf, Skoda's, and yes some BMW's. This just mentions a few. All of these cars have problems of one sort of another and the proof is that I do see them broken down on the side of the freeways too. I have done some research and found that most lower end euro cars are manufactured in south east Asia (eg Thailand).... And remember, parts for euro cars are significantly more expensive. I've always believed that a naturally aspirated petrol engine (eg falcon engine) can last considerably longer than a turbo diesel would (most low end euro cars are TD), for starters.

G'day , It cost her $22,000..I remember her telling me that when she bought it early this year.
It must be just out of warranty because Jill had to foot the nearly three grand to fix it. It's diesel..
The Skoda is a 2010 model I understand..
The scary part of any car for me is stalling , Ford , Holden ,BMW ,Rolls Royce , it doesn't matter..Just imagine halfway through overtaking a camper van or something and the engine stalls/ shuts down or as you're halfway across a busy intersection..Leaves you totally vulnerable and why you would lose confidence in your vehicle REAL QUICK...
The $1700 was some major fix with the engine mapping and the nearly $1300 was brakes...
The Skoda was engine mapping , fixed (apparently) but does it unexpectedly still. (just not as often) so Jill's friend told her and why she's worried about hers..
I was just curious if this is a documented inherent issue for VW/Skoda or just pure coincidence..
Jill is going to get out of this car at a big loss she told me because 90 plus minutes a day to and from work with this sort of doubt is scaring her..
If my Falcons did this , I'd do the same..They don't thankfully..

I think the main uissue was that she took it to a VW stealership for diagnosis and repair.

Always get a 2nd opinion....

I'm no fan of VW, don't get me wrong they're nicely built cars that generally handle well and have all the gadgets, but when it comes failure and repair time, they're always a PITFA to work on and parts are expensive, they have a ton of little electrical issues as they age.

We generally won't work on VWs because we've had too many issues with customers over parts prices.

G'day , true...She also told me that it was a frustrating crowd to deal with too..and not a lot of detail or reassurance..like many dealerships sadly..
My next door neighbour has a VW Golf..It's a 1999 model , dark red..Nice car to ride in goes like the clappers for a 2 litre engine etc.. but this has had niggling issues with A/C , over heating a couple of times. windscreen wiper motor has burnt out more than once and other things but it has only a plastic spare key can you believe.
..I'd be terrified to use it and the remote failed on the main key so they need to lock and unlock the car via the door lock..Cost to replace the key a year or two back was about $400. They're pensioners and that's a fortune for them...
As expensive as I thought it was when pricing another key for my XR6 ($340) for key/ cutting /coding it was still cheaper than Kate and Mark's Golf from 15 years before..
Luckily the previous owner of my FG ended up finding the second key..

Have a few friends with their own mechanical businesses, they have come across issues with most modern vehicles where engines have known to cut out, falcons included.

This is new technology for you these days where electronics can be a b***h.

Exact same issue that my BA does.
Every now and then you will be driving along and it throws a check engine light and the throttle does nothing.

G'day EFA is Education Facility Attendant..my job for the last 21 years...We do maintenance , cleaning duties and security call outs..
Some other Aussie States call us School Attendants , Janitors or Custodians we'd be in the USA , etc....
One of my daily areas is the Art Department at our local High School and Jill is the Art Teacher..see her almost every day.. The Tiguan is a really nice vehicle but her trip daily from a neighbouring town includes the Elephant Pass..This is why she doesn't like the idea of her car stalling..not a good place to get off the road and is narrow and steep in places...I can see her point..Cheers Rod...
