Actual event.
OHS inspector was not caught speeding, he was just driving along and saw two GDs operating on the side of the road without the pretty vests and pulled up to suggest that they should be worn.

Coppers were young and, how shall I put it, not interested in his opinion.

OHS guy drove off and rang Makerston St (HQ) and reported incedent to senior officer.

GD coppers got bums kicked, no fines, no charges either criminally or departmently.

Radio station found out, did a beat up and senior officer admitted that it did actually take place.

Of course like all legends it gets better and moves everytime it is told.

That's complete rubbish.
There is nothing in legislation or SOPs that says they have to wear their vests. If anyone had actually been a copper they would know that in some cases, the vests are a workplace hazard. If you've ever been in a situation where you are worried about getting shot, then a day-glo vest is a health hazard. Doesn't apply to traffic coppers?? What about the traffic cop that got killed last year in vic ?? a couple of years ago a traffic cop was shot in sydney... despite the fanciful musings by some day dreamers ... cops face a bigger challenge that how many tickets to write.
It's another urban legend dreamed up to make little people feel better about themselves :
